A trolley car of total weight 3000N runs on rails of 1.5m gauge and travels a
curve 30m radius at 8.7 m/s. The rails being at the same level. The car has
four wheels of 72cm diameter and each of the two axles is driven by a motor
running in a opposite direction to the wheels at a speed of 5 times the speed of
rotation of vehicle. Each axle with gear and wheels has a Moment of inertia
147kg m2. Each motor with the shaft and gear pinion has a Moment of inertia
10.5kg m2. Has centre of gravity 90 cm above the rail level. Allowing the
centrifugal and gyroscopic action, determine the vertical force exerted by
each wheel on the rails.

3. [10]

The mass of the motor cycle along with the rider is 180 kg. The height of the
centre of gravity of total mass is 600mm above the ground when it moves
straight. Each wheel has a diameter of 700mm and mass moment of inertia of
2 kgm2.The engine rotates at a speed of 5 times the road wheel and engine
rotating parts have mass moment of inertia of 0.2 kgm2. Determine the angle
of heel required if the motor cycle negotiates a curve of radius 100 meters at
a speed of 108 km/hr.

4. Explain the Equilibrium of Two –force and Three-force Members. [10]

OR

5. With reference to a Slider crank mechanism, derive the relations for; [10]

(A) The Angular Velocity and Angular acceleration of the connecting rod,
(B) Turning moment on the crank shaft.

6. A Hartnell governor has a speed range of 390rpm to 410rpm for a lift of 2cm.
the sleeve arm and ball arm are 10cm and 15cm respectively. The radius of
rotation of balls is 15cm from the governor axis when the ball arm is vertical [10]
and the speed of the governor is minimum. If the mass of each ball is 2kg,
determine (i) load on the spring for minimum and maximum speeds and (ii)
spring rate.

In the deferential band brake, as shown in figure below, the diameter of the
drum is 900 mm, and the coefficient of friction between the drum and the band
is 0.3. The angle of contact is 2400. When a force of 650N is applied at the free
end of the lever, find the maximum and the minimum force in the band, and

the torque which can be applied by the brake?

8. Four masses M1, M2, M3 and M4 are 200 kg, 300 kg, 240 kg and 260 kg [10]
respectively. The corresponding radii of rotation are 0.2 m, 0.15 m, 0.25 m and
0.3 m respectively and the angle between successive masses are 45°, 75° and
135°. Find the position and magnitude of balance mass required if its radius of
rotation is 0.25 m.

9. The following data refer to two cylinder locomotive with cranks at 90°: [10]
Reciprocating mass per cylinder = 300 kg ; Crank radius = 0.3 m ;
Driving wheel diameter = 1.8 m ; Distance between cylinder centre lines
= 0.65 m ; Distance between the driving wheel central planes = 1.55 m.
Determine i) the fraction of the reciprocating masses to be balanced, if
the hammer blow is not to exceed 46 kN at 96.5 kmph,
ii) the variation in tractive effort and, iii)the maximum swaying couple

respectively from the left support. Taking E=20 Gpa. Find the frequency of
transverse vibrations using Rayleigh’s method.
OR
11 A shaft, 1.5 m long, supported by flexible bearings at the ends carries two [10]
. wheels each of 50 kg mass. One wheel is situated at the centre of the shaft and
the other at a distance of 375 mm from the centre towards left. The shaft is
hollow of external diameter 75 mm and internal diameter 40 mm. The density
of the shaft material is 7700 kg/m3 and its modulus of elasticity is 200 GN/m2.
