Assignment #1: Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art

The following works are selected from Actions for the Earth, which I have visited multiple times since I
discovered it’s showing. Honorable mention: the four Ana Mendieta prints. I cried a little when I saw them. The
gallery attendant asked me if I was alright. I have never seen her work in person before and it felt like I really
was in the right place at that moment.

1. As Grand as What, 2021. by Hylozoic/Desires aka Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Trappeser.

I have been visiting this piece once a week since the start of the semester. I find it to be designed in such
a way that effectively facilitates brain reprogramming. The intersection of the immersive three screens with the
binaural audio creates a feeling which I have never experienced in public while sober. I’m mixed race, and as a
result I have inherited some very diverse religious and spiritual customs, which oddly align on many key ideas
and practices. To see a mix of old and new world, western and eastern, as well as scientific ideas expressed in a
piece of work representing an ongoing ceremony makes me feel very seen. I feel an odd kinship with the
creators of this work. I just got married, and my husband and I make music together. He’s more into it than I
am. But I make art, and sometimes video, so we have been trying to merge our ideas. This work has been
showing me that my crazy dreams are real, possible, within reach, and not new. It’s just that the prevailing
current powers suck. This love ceremony has really helped me to re-brainwash myself into my own ideology,
not prevailing dogma, and work towards the life I want to live in.

2. Premium Connect, 2017. by Tabita Rezaire.

This one took me a couple of visits to actually be able to sit through. I think it is purposely designed to
be hard to listen to, and difficult to take seriously. All the best magical learning tools are designed in this way,
because it’s hard to learn about consciousness. We need some theatrical qualities such as humor to take the edge
off, and ward away those who will use the ideas for harm. Although I could only sit through a few minutes at
first, every visit to this short film makes me laugh my ass off! And god, I need to be more in tune with my
divination abilities. Whether organizing my computer, or my closet, or letting my words flow without pressure.
All of it makes me feel connected to my helping spirits and ancestors. I have been too tied up in the material
world and all of it’s unnecessary drama, and this film helped me to realize it. To close, here are some
non-sequitur notes reflecting my immediate reaction upon my first full viewing of the piece: Science is not
pursuing absolute truth, but rather measuring nature. When we draw upon the lives of our ancestors we are
connected to the divine internet. Binary code originated as Ifa divination, which was stolen by slave traders who
use these divinatory systems to build up their own wealth.
