3 Configuration Settings

This chapter lists the configuration settings to be specified for each GE (D20 Family) master
protocol component instance. The SMP Config software program is generally used to define these
settings.
Only GE (D20 Family)-specific settings of the protocol are described here. The settings common
to all master protocol components are described in the Protocol Common Concepts Reference
Manual.

3.1 General Settings

Every instance of this master protocol component contains general settings, which set the general
behavior of the component. The following table shows the general settings that are specific to the
GE (D20 Family) master protocol.

Setting Description
68K Prompt The prompt produced by the device in the TELNET session. This prompt
depends on the device type; for instance, the prompt of a D20 is different than
the one produced by a D25.
For additional information, refer to the “Connecting to the 68K Monitor”
section (68K Monitor Prompts) of the 68K System Monitor User’s Guide,
page 1-2.
Default: D25>

Username The username of an account that has access to the device. This account must
have the right to execute 68K System Monitor console’s commands.
Default: (no user name)

Password The corresponding account password.

Default: (no password)

Rx Retry Count The number of consecutive times bad responses must be received (or no
response at all) before a communication failure is declared and an attempt is
made to re-initialize the link.
Range: 0 to 10
Default: 9

GE (D20 Family) Master Protocol Reference Manual •3

EAS-SA QF-MKT-02 Rev.02

Setting Description
Rx Timeout The number of milliseconds to wait for the end device to respond to a request
before attempting any retries. The timer is started after the last data of a request
is transmitted to the remote device.
Range: 100 to 30,000 milliseconds
Default: 5000 milliseconds

Keep Alive Timer When using a TCP connection, the number of seconds between two keep-alive
commands that are transmitted to the device to prevent the session to be
terminated automatically.
This setting value should be smaller than the value specified for the Auto-
Logout Timer setting, as described in the “Connecting to the 68K Monitor”
section (Auto-Logout Timer) of the 68K System Monitor User’s Guide,
page 1-2.
Range: 60 to 4,294,967 seconds
Default: 270 seconds

Table 3-1 General Settings

3.2 Data Point Settings

All data points produced by the GE (D20 Family) master protocol are system (logical) data points.
The settings of these points are presented in details in the Protocol Common Concepts Reference
Manual

3.3 Configuration File Settings

Every instance of this master protocol component contains configuration file settings, which
allows monitoring configuration changes in the device. Three different groups of settings need to
be configured: Configuration Files, Command Groups and Group Details.
Configuration File settings specified how these files will be managed from the SMP Gateway
perspective, in regards to the system folder where to save the files and at which frequency
configuration requests should be transmitted to the IED.
The following table shows the Configuration File settings.

Setting Description
Frequency The time interval (in minutes) between two configuration scans.
Range: 10 to 4,294,967 seconds
Default: 3600 seconds

Disabled See “Event File Settings” in the Master Protocol Common Concepts document,
except for the default value.
Default: checkmark

Folder See “Event File Settings” in the Master Protocol Common Concepts document.

Min Free Disk Space See “Event File Settings” in the Master Protocol Common Concepts document.

Description See “Event File Settings” in the Master Protocol Common Concepts document.

Table 3-2 Configuration File settings

Command Group settings define the different type of files that will be created based on the
configuration commands (requests) transmitted to the IED. One command group (i.e. type of file)
can be defined for each category of configuration information.
The following table shows the Command Group settings.

Setting Description
Name Name of the command group.

Disabled A checkmark indicates that the master protocol will not attempt to retrieve
configuration information using command of this group.
Range: checkmark / no checkmark
Default: no checkmark

Category Specifies the module’s configuration category.

Allowed values: Hardware
Firmware
Configuration.
Default: Hardware

Table 3-3 Command Group settings

Once the command groups are defined, you must specify the commands (requests) that will be
transmitted to the IED for each group, and the number of the lines in the response that will be
saved to file.
The following table shows the Group Detail settings.

Setting Description
Command The 68K System Monitor command used to retrieve the needed configuration.
For the list of supported commands, see “Supported Requests (Commands)”,
page 1.

Line Number Indicates which lines of the command’s response will be saved to file. Empty
lines count and the first line is numbered 1.
To specify multiple line numbers, separate consecutive lines by dashes (ex. “1-
3”, for lines 1, 2 and 3) and non-consecutive lines by semi-columns (ex. “1; 3;
5”, for lines 1, 3 and 5).
Type 0 to save all lines from the response.
Range: 1 to 49 ASCII chars.
Default: 0 (All lines)

Setting Description
Disabled A checkmark indicates that the master protocol will not attempt to transmit this
command to the IED; as a result the information that is provided by this
command’s response will not be saved to file.
This setting can be used, for example, when the corresponding configuration
information does not need to be retrieved temporarily.
Range: checkmark / no checkmark
Default: no checkmark

4 Implementation Details

4.1 Startup Sequence

The protocol component must go through the following steps on startup:
 Parses the configuration file.
 Initializes the various logs, traces and statistics.
 Initializes the communications link.
 Starts the scan cycle.

4.2 Scan Cycle

The protocol component manages the device polling cycle based on the following principles:
 The protocol is half duplex.
 The device should never send data without having first received a request for data.
 There is a response to every request.

The GE (D20 Family) response processing rules are:

 A response is valid only if it arrives within the configured time limit.
 The response must match the request.
 The same request is re-issued if the reception status is not correct, up to the number of retry
counts configured.
Whatever the reason, the link is reset from scratch if too many consecutive bad responses are
received; “too many” being the number of retries configured.
An initialization sequence is used to connect to the device and access the 68K System Monitor
console. When using a serial connection, the initialization sequence is executed every scanning
cycle since the device is disconnected at the end of the configuration files scanning cycle. When
using a TCP connection, the initialization sequence is performed only upon connection. The link
stays connected using a keep-alive command that is sent at the configured frequency.

The configuration files scanning cycle is as follows:

 Commands from each group are transmitted in sequence; responses are parsed and the
specified lines are stored for comparison with the previous configuration data.
 At the end of the configuration acquisition cycle, the configuration data is compared with the
one acquired at the previous acquisition cycle.

GE (D20 Family) Master Protocol Reference Manual •7

EAS-SA QF-MKT-02 Rev.02

 For each group, if the configuration data has changed, all the group’s commands are
retransmitted and the configuration data is saved to file.
 If the specified system folder is configured for compression, all configuration files resulting
from the same acquisition cycle are gathered in a single ZIP file, along with a header file.
 For validation purposes, the content of the configuration files is compared to the acquisition
data a last time, ensuring that the save operation successfully completed.
