Monster Genetics Lab

We have learned about traits that are dominant and recessive. Look around you and you will
see dominant and recessive traits everywhere! Today we will be creating monsters to see how
these traits are passed down from generation to generation.

Dominant traits are represented by an uppercases allele. Recessive traits are represented by a
lowercase allele. We receive one allele from each parent for every single trait on our body.
Therefore we will have two alleles for each trait. The combination of which allele we receive are
what makes us, us!

Remember, whenever a dominant allele is present it will overpower the recessive allele so that
the recessive trait does not show.

Let’s practice:
AA : Dominant or recessive?
Aa : Dominant or recessive?
aa: Dominant or recessive?

Now we will be creating monster creatures using dominant and recessive traits. Today you will
be flipping coins to determine whether or not your monster will have a dominant or recessive
trait. You will flip your coin twice for each trait.

Head = Dominant
Tails = recessive

But, remember you flip the coin twice! So if you flip once and its recessive and once and its
dominant, you will have the dominant trait!

Monster Genetics Day Two

Directions: You will now use the genotype you and your partner have found to determine
genotype for your offspring. First you will fill in the punnett squares for each of the different traits
you flipped for. Then you will determine probability of inheritance for each trait.

Then you will go through each trait and determine which one your baby will have. If you
have a 100% probability of passing down a certain trait, your baby will automatically
inherit that trait. If there is less than a 100% chance, lets say 50% for dominant and 50%
for recessive, you will need to roll the dice.

If you roll:
1: Re-roll
2: Re-roll
3: Chose the alleles in box one
4: Choose the alleles in box two
5: Choose the alleles in box three
6:Choose the alleles in box four.

You will then record your alleles for your offspring in the table on the last page in this packet.
You will be creating two babies so you will be doing this twice.

When you are finished you will be drawing your family and creating a family picture.
