Communication systems (EC-209)
ASSIGNMENT-1
Course Outcomes:
1. Comprehend introductory principles of communication systems such as types of signals
and the process of modulation
2. Elucidate the process of amplitude, frequency and phase modulation and describe the
design of their transmitters, and receivers
3. Apply sampling theory and analyze pulse code modulation and delta modulation.
4. Apply the knowledge of random variables and processes to study noise in
communication systems.
5. Compare the noise performance and design trade-offs of various modulation schemes.

1. Explain the block diagram of elements of communication system. What is the need of
modulation? [CO1]
2. Derive the condition for a distortion-less communication channel. [CO1]
3. Discuss the Primary Communication Resources. [CO1]
4. Compare Analog communication and Digital Communication. [CO1]
5. An AM signal is represented by:
𝑥(𝑡) = (10 + 4 𝑐𝑜𝑠1000𝜋𝑡)cos (2𝜋 𝑋 106 𝑡)

Calculate:
(i) Modulation index
(ii) Total signal power
(iii) Total sideband power. [CO2]

6. An AM signal is represented by:

𝑥(𝑡) = (20 + 2 𝑐𝑜𝑠3000𝜋𝑡 + 10𝑐𝑜𝑠6000𝜋𝑡)cos (2𝜋 𝑋 105 𝑡)
Calculate:
(i) Modulation index
(ii) Ratio of sideband power to total power. [CO2]

7. For an AM transmission, the message signal is given by 𝑚(𝑡) = cos (200𝜋𝑡). If carrier
amplitude is 𝐴𝑐 = 10. Calculate the transmission bandwidth and total power of the
modulated signal. [CO2]
8. Compare DSB-SC and DSB-C with respect to following parameters: power
transmission, bandwidth, cost, efficiency. [CO2]
9. If message signal is given by 10cos (2𝜋 𝑋 103 𝑡), and carrier signal is given by
20 cos(𝜋 𝑋 106 𝑡). Draw the spectrum of DSB-SC, DSB-C and SSB-C modulated
signal and comment on its bandwidth. [CO2]
10. A broadcast transmitter radiates 20 KW when the modulation percentage is 75.
Calculate carrier power and power of each sideband. [CO2]
11. Explain with block diagram how DSB-SC signal can be demodulated. What will be
the output if local carrier frequency is 90° phase shift with incoming DSB-SC signal?
12. An angle modulated signal has the form
𝑠(𝑡) = 50 cos(2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡 + 4𝑠𝑖𝑛2000𝜋𝑡) ; where 𝑓𝑐 = 10𝑀𝐻𝑧
(i) Determine the average transmitted power
(ii) Determine the peak frequency and phase deviation
(iii) It is FM or PM signal. Explain? [CO2]
13. Derive equation of an FM in terms of Bessel coefficients. What is the significance of
representing FM in this form? [CO2]
14. A carrier 𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜔𝑐 𝑡 modulated by a signal,
𝑓(𝑡) = 2𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝜋𝑡 + 6𝑐𝑜𝑠2000𝜋𝑡 + 7𝑐𝑜𝑠4000𝜋𝑡,
Find the bandwidth of FM using Carson’s rule. Assume 𝐾𝑓 = 10x103 Hz/volt. Also
find the deviation ratio. [CO2]
