COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

Department: Construction and Building Engineering

Course : CB 523Methods & Equpiment for Const. I
Lecturer : Dr. Mohamed Salem Nashwan

Term Project – 2022/2023-2

Use the last 4 digits in your AAST Identification number (ID) to replace X, Y, Z, and M values
provided in this project.
For example, if your ID is [16101234], then use [1, 2, 3, 4] to replace X, Y, Z, and M values,
respectively. In this example; X=1, Y=2, Z=3, and M=4.

A construction company is awarded a contract to construct a multi-story building in the new

administrative capital of Egypt. The details of zone A of the building is shown in Figure 1 and 2.
Each floor of the building is constructed in 2 stages:
1) constructing the floor columns and walls, followed by 2) constructing the floor slab.

The site engineer is concerned about the design and quantity of formwork needed to construct zone
A of the building with the following criteria:
‒ For all spacing between X-Axis in Figure 1, add extra (X*10) cm to each dimension.
‒ For all spacing between Y-Axis in Figure 1, add extra (Y*10) cm to each dimension.
‒ Specifications require using high-strength concrete without additives and having a unit
weight equal (2350+10*M) kg/m3.
‒ The construction of walls and slab items is scheduled during the summer with an average
temperature equal (30+M) °C.
‒ Columns and wall surfaces should have a rough face.
‒ Slab surface should have a fair face.
‒ Forms will have continuing reuse.
‒ Available sheets lengths are 1.2 m, 2.7 m, 3.0 m, and 4.2 m.
‒ For X= 0, 1, 2, 3, 4; use Douglas Fir-Larch with available lumber sizes: 1x4”, 1x6”, 2x6”,
2x8”, and 4x4” for formwork members.
‒ For X= 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; use Southern Pine with available lumber sizes: 1x4”, 1x6”, 2x4”, 2x8”,
4x4”, and 6x6” for formwork members.
‒ For M= 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; use Class I plywood sheets face grain across support with (4+M)/8
in thickness and 120 x 240 cm in size.
‒ For M= 6, 7, 8, 9; use Class I plywood sheets face grain across support with M/8 in
thickness and 120 x 240 cm in size,
‒ The expected rate of concrete placement in equal (2+M*0.1) m/hr.
‒ Wind force prescribed by the local loading code = (15+M) lb/ft2
‒ Concrete will be vibrated internally.
‒ Deflection of formwork is not allowed to be < l/360 as required by project specifications.
1
‒ Ties are 15-kN capacity with 100-mm wide wedges bearing on wales.
‒ Round the spacing of each element to a modular number of 5 cm.

It is required to:
1) Design the most economic formwork for the columns and wall.
2) Design the most economic formwork for the slab.
3) Estimate the number of pieces of each size of sheathing, studs, wales, ties, braces, etc. that is
required to build columns and wall formwork of one floor.
4) Estimate the number of pieces of each size of sheathing, joist, stringers, shores, braces, etc.
that is required to build slab formwork of one floor.
5) Estimate the quantity in square inches of woods required to be purchased to construct the
building.
6) Estimate the cost of formwork materials. Cost of cubic meter of lumber is LE 5800. Cost of
Class I plywood sheet is LE 600. One tie cost is LE 30. Assume that members facing concrete
are reused for 7 times, while the rest of member will be reused for 30 times. Ties are reused
for 300 times.
7) Estimate the quantity of reinforced concrete in columns, wall, and slab.
8) Calculate the cost of building floor if the unit cost of concrete = 2200 L.E./m3.
9) Calculate the ratio of formwork cost to concrete cost for this project.
10) Calculate the time required to construct column, wall, and slab formworks, if the production
rate for the crew is 3 m3/hr for walls formwork, 1.5 m3/hr for columns formwork and 5 m3/hr
for slab formwork
11) Draw sketches showing formwork elements location for column, wall, and slab formworks.

Important Note: Please, show all your calculations in Details
