Chapter 3

Coordinate Geometry

Q1. Write any two points lying on x- axis and equidistant from origin.
Q2. The point ( a, b) lies in 2nd quadrant. Which is greater a or b ?

Q3. Draw the quadrilateral whose vertices are:

(i) (1,1),(2,4),(8,4) and (10,1)
(ii) (-2,2),(-4,2),(-6,-2) and (-4,-6)

Q4. Plot the point P(-3,4).Draw PM and PN perpendiculars to X-axis and Y-axis
respectively. State the co-ordinates of the points M and N.
Q5. Find the area of the triangle whose vertices are : (0,4),(0,0) and (2,0) by
plotting them on graph.
Q6. If y-coordinate of a point is zero, then where will this point lie in the co-
ordinate plane?
Q7. Find the point whose ordinate is -3 and which lies on y-axis.
Q8. If the points (-3,a) and (b,4) lie on the straight line with equation y=4x, find
the values of a and b.
Q9. The distance of a point from x-axis is 3 units and from y-axis is 5 units. If the
point lies in third quadrant, find the co-ordinate of the point.
Q10. Find the co-ordinate of the point:
1) Whose abscissa is -5 and ordinate is 4
2) Whose ordinate is -7 and lies on y-axis
3) Whose abscissa is 1 and lies on x-axis
4) Whose abscissa equals the ordinate and whose distance from y-axis is 3 units
in the positive direction of x-axis (3,3)
Q 11. Find the distance of the point (2,3) from
a) X axis
b) Y axis
c) Origin

Q12. A policeman and a thief are equidistant from the jewel box. Upon considering jewel
box as origin, the position of policeman is (0,5). If the ordinate of the position of the thief is zero,
then write the coordinates of the position of thief.
