1 Foodies’ delight Stage 8 Worksheet 1.

Steamed fish with Morogo

Reading
Read the review below written by Mercy Mukondi, an experienced food critic who visited an
established restaurant last week.

Many times I have enjoyed the culinary delights of Kisumu Cabin, here in
Kenya. And many times I have tasted such delicious local food there. The
restaurant has been serving Kisumu dwellers, and tourists, for 17 years now,
and in all but one of those years, received 4* ratings from our team at the
5 Kenyan Chronicle. I should say, quietly, we do have a 5* rating, but we never
use it.
Many of you who are reading this review already know how high the
standards are set at Kisumu Cabin. You wouldn’t expect anything else, would
you, but a solid, 4* dining experience?
10 Well, last week I was in shock. My food was inedible! I ordered the local fish,
marinated in an orange jus, and served with steamed fresh Morogo. This is a
dish best cooked quickly, with the fish fried in herb butter in a hot pan after it
has rested in the marinade for four hours.
It was awful. The fish was salty and old, and the Morogo was as fresh as an
15 old sock. It was reminiscent of a meal served on a sailing ship crossing the
Atlantic before the days of engines.
Glossary
Morogo dark, leafy vegetable, also known as African spinach
jus French word used for a thin gravy or sauce

Responding to the review
You are due to attend Kisumu Cabin next weekend with a friend. Will you still be going?
Think about what Mercy has said and call your friend. It can be an imaginary phone call.
What have you both decided to do, and why?
