Year 3 - 28th June 2024

REFLECTION

This week, we were very fortunate with the beautiful warm weather, which allowed us to go
outside frequently to create art in nature for our IPC Art as a Window unit. The students
learnt more about nature journaling and practised sketching and painting landscapes. They
also learnt to zoom in on details and compared objects like leaves that are just a bit different
from one another.

During Writing Workshop, we started giving awards to books that inspire us and that we
believe deserve a prize. The students have chosen various awards and are enjoying writing
these pieces to encourage each other to read more books. In maths, we started the last unit
of the school year, 'Mass and Capacity.' You can help your child by letting them play with
measuring cups and scales and encouraging them to read the measurements.

Next week, the students need to return all the class library books. Please bring them back to
school before Wednesday, July 3rd. On Thursday, July 4th, all the school library books must
be returned to the library.

3B students trying out different types of scales 3C students exploring art in nature

The Year 3 students raised more than 600 euros during Market Day. This is an impressive
amount. We would like to thank you for your enthusiasm for this event and the high turnout of
parents and guardians. We had a discussion with the students on how they liked to use this
money. They decided that part of it will be spent on a fun activity for the children so we
decided to go bowling with all the Year 3 students on Monday, 8th July. They also wanted to
have a pizza/pancake party. With the remaining amount, the Year 3 students would like to
support a charity organisation. We have contacted Ms. Inma Hidalgo, who is responsible for
coordinating support for charity organisations on behalf of the school. The donations will go
to Warchild and Unicef.
Next week, we celebrate the Year 3 End of the Year party on Friday, 5th July from 12:45 -
2:45 pm. Students need to bring a snack and lunch to school on Friday. If you would like to
join the class party and help, then please contact the class representative of your class.

LEARNING NEXT WEEK

Maths Unit Mass & Capacity

The students learn to :

● Measure, compare, add and subtract mass
● Compare volume
● Compare, add and subtract capacity

It would be very helpful if you can discuss the knowledge organiser with
your child. You can translate the words in the home language of your child.
We also recommend giving your child opportunities to use a scale or to use
different types of measuring containers or cups at home. Here is an example
of one of the activities:

Language Arts Writing Workshop - Opinion Writing

In Writing Workshop, your child will:

● Continue to write awards for books as well as revise awards they

have written.
● Use keywords and patterns on the long-vowel teams chart to fix up
spelling that doesn’t look right.
● Share their opinion writing pieces with other students during the
Writing Workshop celebration.

Reading Workshop
In Reading Workshop, your child will:

● Develop their skills of determining importance in stories.

● Make inferences to develop their comprehension.
Social Emotional In order to support the children with their transitions, they will share a
Learning gratitude circle with their classmates and reflect on memories they have with
those who are leaving.

IPC Unit Art as a Window - Environmental Art

This unit is about:

The natural world offers an endless array of subjects and motifs that have
captivated artists across different cultures and time periods.Children will
discover if art is a feeling or a thought or a message? Is it a message from
the artist or a message to an audience?

In this unit we will explore these questions through art and artists that are
inspired by nature and the environment around us. Artists may be inspired
by, and represent living things, natural objects or landscapes, or they may
use natural, found objects to make art. Art in nature may be permanent or
transient, it could be realistic or abstract, it could be 2D or 3D.

Discovering art in nature and nature in art may encourage us to care about
and make a connection to our world and our surroundings and protect it for
the future.

We have started a nature art journal in our IPC lessons where children will
have lots of opportunity to work with different art materials and next week
our focus will be:
● Comparison
● Zooming into nature to add the finer details

This IPC unit has some particularly tricky subject vocabulary. It would be
very beneficial if you could pre-teach some of the following words and help
your child to translate them to their home language:

nature, artist, art, art medium, sketches, landscape, perspective,

observation, lines, shapes, tone, form

HOME LEARNING

Reading - Please remember to read every night with your child for 15-20 minutes. You can
send home reading books back to school to be changed as often as required, but please
insist that they change books regularly (2 times a week - on Monday and Thursday) as it is
crucial that every child reads as much as possible in Year 3 to improve their reading, retelling
and reading comprehension skills.

Reading - Bug Club - Please login to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk to access the online

reading program Bug Club and enjoy further reading with your child. You will find your child’s
login details in their blue folder.

Maths - Mathletics
Your child has received the Mathletics username and password for Maths home learning.
Please click on the link for the Mathletics website or you can download or use the Mathletics
app on the iPad. Please ask your child to complete the Money activities this week.
