Year 3 - 7th June 2024
REFLECTION
This week, the students have been enthusiastically working on preparations for Market Day.
Some students also went shopping with teachers and TAs. It wasn't always easy to make
choices and stay within the budget of 10 euros, but by staying open-minded, all groups
managed to succeed. There is good collaboration, and we are seeing a lot of discussions
and creativity emerging. We also hope that you can come shopping during the Year 3 Market
Day next week. We have agreed with the students that from 12:00 to 12:15 pm they will also
be allowed to shop at the market themselves to possibly buy something. You might want to
give your child some pocket money so they can choose something at the market.
In math, the students have learned to add fractions and compare fractions. Comparing
fractions is still challenging for many students, and math manipulatives help a lot to visualize
the fractions. We also revisited the math symbols <, >, and = and used them to compare
fractions. Next week, we will finish the unit with an assessment, and afterwards, we will start
the Money unit.
In the Year 3 classes, we are still finishing the last reading assessments. It is important that
your child reads and changes the class library books at their ‘new level’ at least twice a week
during these last weeks to be well-prepared for Year 4 next school year. All school and class
library books need to be returned to school by the end of June.

IPC Unit - You Want it? - I’ve Got it!
This unit is an introduction to basic economic principles of needs and wants,
trade and goods and services. We explore the concepts of trade and why
and how it happens. We consider the importance of trade as well as the
responsibilities of consumers to make responsible and sustainable decisions
when purchasing goods and services.
Next week we will:
● Finish off this current Economics unit with our Market day on
Wednesday.
At the end of next week we start our new unit called:
Art as a Window - Environmental Art
This unit is about:
The natural world offers an endless array of subjects and motifs that have
captivated artists across different cultures and time periods.Children will discover if
art is a feeling or a thought or a message? Is it a message from the artist or a
message to an audience?
In this unit we will explore these questions through art and artists that are inspired
by nature and the environment around us. Artists may be inspired by, and
represent living things, natural objects or landscapes, or they may use natural,
found objects to make art. Art in nature may be permanent or transient, it could
be realistic or abstract, it could be 2D or 3D.
Discovering art in nature and nature in art may encourage us to care about and
make a connection to our world and our surroundings and protect it for the future.

This IPC unit has some particularly tricky subject vocabulary. It would be
very beneficial if you could pre-teach some of the following words and help
your child to translate them to their home language:
needs, wants, survive, trade, goods, services, scarcity, resources, natural
resources, human resources, capital resources, world event, price,
consumers, supply and demand
GENTLE REMINDER - YEAR 3 MARKET DAY
We would like to share with you that we are organising a Year 3 Market Day for the ‘You
Want It - I’ve Got It’ IPC unit on Wednesday 12th of June - please keep this day open to
come and support the children from Year 3. We hope you can visit us between 11:30 AM
to 12:15 PM to see the products and services the Year 3 students have created or will
provide. The students have been given a loan of €10 from the school to set up their
businesses and purchase any necessary items. This loan must be repaid to the school after
Market Day. We encourage you to buy the goods and services offered by the students.
Therefore, we invite you to visit our Year 3 Market Day on 12 June from 11:30 AM to 12:15
PM. The market stalls will likely be set up in the aula, and if the weather is nice, possibly
outside the Primary entrance. We hope to see as many parents as possible. Please also
note that in the next coming days the teachers will take the children who would like to buy
supplies for their market stalls to the Waldeck shopping centre so that they can prepare their
products and services.
