In the video, “Learning Literary Character Types Using TV and Movie Clips,” I learned

more than I expected. Going into this assignment, I thought I had a promising idea of several

types of character. However, something that really stood out to me was that I never realized that

Bella Swan is labeled as a “flat” character. I have seen all the Twilight movies, countless of

times, and have noticed how awkward Bella really is. But I never sat down and thought about

what kind of character she is. I found this new information to be quite surprising and intriguing. I

believe it will make me analyze characters more. Additionally, I found that this video helped me

distinguish between a round and dynamic character easier. I am not sure why, but I always ended

up getting the two confused. But I now know that a dynamic character refers to whether the

character changes or not, and if they learn a lesson in their story. Round is simply the

characteristics of the character; they do not necessarily have to change in their story.

With that being said, the main reason I would get the two confused is due to the fact that

my English courses in the past never went too in depth with this material. We always went over

protagonists and antagonists, but never round vs. flat or dynamic vs. static. The video, “Learning

Literary Character Types Using TV and Movie Clips,” as well as our Bedford text, really cleared

the air for me.

Story 1:

For this question, I chose “Eveline” by James Joyce. I have never read or even seen

this story before, nor have I heard of this author. I found this story to be intriguing and
powerful. After reading, I would summarize by saying it is about a strong young woman

named Eveline who is faced with the challenge of making a difficult decision.

I would say that Eveline is definitely the protagonist since the story is about her

thoughts and choices. As for antagonist I would not say it is a person, but instead Eveline’s

fear of change, her feelings of duty for her family, and the memories of her mother. These

things were holding her back from whether or not she wanted to leave.

I see Eveline as a static character because even though she thinks about leaving, her

character does not change or even act on the thought. Though there is an example of a

dynamic, her love interest Frank, who represents the chance of change or action and

encouraged Eveline to start a new life.

I would say Eveline is a round character since we get to know her feelings and

memories. On the other hand, Frank is a flat character because do not know much about him

besides the fact that he is kind and wants Eveline to leave.

Story 2:

For my second story, I chose “Jubilee” by Kirstin Valdez Quade. I have never read or

heard of this author before getting assigned this text. After reading I found the story to be quite

compelling and interesting. The protagonist of the story is Andrea, and the antagonist is a

combination of pressure from society, class differences, and her internal conflict about who she

is and her feelings towards Parker and the Lowell’s rather than a single person.
I think Andrea is a dynamic character because we get to, she her reflect on her

insecurities and feelings through the story. An example of a static character would be Parker, as

she goes untroubled and unchanged.

As for flat and round characters, Andrea is round and Matty is flat. Throughout the story,

Andrea has complex emotions and motivations. Matty, on the other hand, is not as deeply

developed and simply support’s Andrea's story.
