Lesson Plan: Division and Estimation for

Grade 4 Mathematics

Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students will learn about division, estimating quotients, and problem-solving
strategies related to division. The lesson will include direct instruction, guided practice, and
independent activities to reinforce the concepts.

Grade Level
4th Grade

Duration
50 minutes

Common Core Standards

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6: Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to
four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit
whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.3: Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers
and having whole number answers using the four operations.

Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Divide two-digit and three-digit numbers by one-digit and two-digit numbers.
2. Estimate quotients using rounding.
3. Solve real-life problems involving division.

Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Division flashcards
- Worksheets for practice
- Pencils and erasers
- Paper for scratch work

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet students and introduce the topic of the day: Division and Estimation.
- Ask students if they know what division is and how it relates to sharing or grouping items.
- Briefly explain that today they will learn how to divide whole numbers and estimate quotients.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Explaining Division:
- Introduce the division process using a simple example: 90 ÷ 15.
- Write the problem on the board and explain each step:
- How many groups of 15 are in 90?
- Show the long division process step-by-step.

2. Estimating Quotients:
- Explain what estimation means and why it is useful.
- Demonstrate rounding numbers to make division easier (e.g., rounding 73 to 75 when
dividing by 5).
- Provide an example: Estimate the quotient of 675 ÷ 7 by rounding 675 to 700.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

- Divide students into small groups and give them division flashcards.
- Have each group practice dividing numbers and estimating quotients using the following
problems:
1. 85 ÷ 17
2. 966 ÷ 46
3. Estimate the quotient of 73 ÷ 5.

- Walk around the classroom to assist groups and ensure understanding.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

- Distribute worksheets with a mix of division problems and estimation questions.
- Example problems:
1. Divide: 768 ÷ 24
2. Estimate: 4,950 ÷ 30
3. Solve the word problem: "If a store earns 5,500 pesos on Monday and 6,780 pesos on
Tuesday, how much did it earn on average each day?"

Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Review key concepts learned in the lesson.
- Ask students to share one thing they learned about division or estimation.
- Remind students of the importance of these skills in real-life situations, such as budgeting or
sharing items.

Assessment
- Collect worksheets to assess students' understanding of division and estimation.
- Observe group work and participation during guided practice.

Extensions
- For students who finish early, provide additional challenging problems or ask them to create
their own division word problems to share with the class.

Reflection
- After the lesson, reflect on what worked well and what could be improved for future lessons.
Consider student engagement and understanding of the material.
