“Humanity's greatest achievements come not from individual brilliance but from our ability to

work together and support one another. It is in cooperation and mutual dependence that we find
our true strength.”

Good morning

Respected Judges and Esteemed Delegates

These profound words from Nelson Mandela highlight the importance of cooperation and
interdependence in all aspects and the UK believes that they should be a beacon to guide
ourselves by as we gather here to deliberate on the eastward expansion of NATO

Since its inception, the number of NATO members has grown from 12 to 32 as of 2024. As a
founding member of NATO, the UK has been instrumental in its functioning. In fact, as of 2024,
The UK was the third largest military spender in NATO. NATO not only provides its member
states with stability and military support but also with its economy. In line with NATO’s beliefs,
each member state must have a free market economy. This requirement has been shown to
provide large benefits to striving member states with foreign investment in Hungary 3 years after
its accession rising by nearly double to 6 billion dollars when it was predicted to drop. In
Poland’s 20 years of membership in NATO, 70% of the country’s population believes that NATO
has had a direct improvement in the security of their country. NATO also undertakes missions in
non-member states to ensure the safety and stability of its member’s borders and their stability.
It has also helped safeguard Human Rights in its area of influence and has worked closely with
the UN and the EU to combat human trafficking.

The delegate of the UK would also like to address the recent misinformation spread concerning
the expansion of NATO eastwards, especially to Ukraine. Ever since Ukraine declared its intent
to join NATO in 2017, it has been harassed with threats from the Russian Federation, often
militaristic and nuclear in nature until it culminated in the 2022 illegal invasion of Ukraine carried
out by Russia. We maintain that there was never a promise given by NATO to the Soviet Union
that NATO would not expand eastwards. NATO has always had an open-door policy for all
European states who may wish to join and are willing to take on the obligations of being a
member state.

Thank You
Honourable Chair, Distinguished Delegates
NATO was formed out of necessity after the end of the Second World War, which was the most
destructive conflict in European history. NATO was created to stabilize the continent after such
a disastrous conflict. NATO has been instrumental in guiding the fate of European Nations ever
since its inception. It has mitigated the effects of severe conflicts such as the breakup of
Yugoslavia and has assisted in the peaceful dismantling of the Warsaw Pact and safe
navigation through the Cold War. In the modern day, it has emerged as one of the leading
members of the international community and has undertaken a role to stabilize not only Europe
but also its non-member partner states that are present worldwide. NATO has assisted its
constituents with the necessary peace and military backing to maintain their sovereignty and
their national right.
89% of surveyed citizens in Lithuania are in active support of NATO bases within their territory.
Estonia and Poland, on the other hand, are already spending 3.4 and 4.1% of their GDP on their
military budget. NATO has continued to inspire and bring stability and peace to all its member
states and Europe as a whole. The UK believes that continued cooperation within NATO will
lead to a renewed Pax Europae that will bring untold prosperity to Europe

Russia’s indiscriminate bombing of Ukraine has not only led to an astonishing number
of civilian deaths, it has also wrecked Ukraine’s infrastructure. Russia is the sole player
in Europe which is actively working to undermine the sense of cooperation felt by the
continent in recent years.

Honourable Chair, Distinguished Delegates

It is the view of the UK that the effects of these two states, The Russian Federation and the
People’s Republic of China have in recent years repeatedly violated international law, the
sovereignty of bordering nations, have made nuclear threats to obtain their goals and have been
actively undermining peace and stability in the world. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in
2022 has been only the most recent of its many deplorable transgressions such as intervention
in Syria, invasion of Georgia, and the annexation of Crimea. Russia has dealt a shattering blow
to peace in Europe and has precipitated a huge drop in Ukraine’s GDP and economic capacity.

China, on the other hand, has continued its chain of “re-education camps” for Uyghurs. These
camps came up nearly overnight in Xinjiang province and are currently housing its Uyghur
residents in deplorable conditions. China has used its Uyghur population as slave labor and
forced them to work in the cotton farms of Xinjiang and has also carried out forced sterilization
campaigns on Uyghur Women. Although UK is open to productive diplomatic dialogue but
cannot ignore its blatant human rights violations and crimes against humanity The UK decries
China’s concentration camps and its use of a minority group previously promised autonomy as
slave labor. The UK believes that China’s treatment of the Uyghurs is eerily reminiscent of a
particularly dark period in Europe’s own history.
