World behind the story

“A young woman who commits herself to an old woman in a world where life depends upon
men.” The statement reflects the veracious traditions wherein women were brought up to submit
to their husbands and to ideally secure themselves into a marriage. This was most accurate in
the stories and we can collect most narratives and tales of women having no more use than to
marry a man and bear his child as ascribed in the Hebrew bible. “To whom does this young
woman belong?” Truly a patriarchal question. Though the question fits this culture, it does not fit
Ruth, who remains to have a strong tension upon the brought up culture. The narrative in the
text mentioned by Boaz that Ruth is called a “worthy woman” and a “capable wife” shows the
mindset of men during that time period scout for women and sees them as nothing more than
wives.

The book of Ruth circles around the story of a non-israelite and the controversy of intermarriage
at this age in the 5th century BCE. Accredited to the prophet Samuel traditionally and the
identity of Ruth is yet to be revealed. But there are several proposals on who might’ve
contributed to the authorship of Ruth, Talmud has written most literary texts like the rest of the
books in the Hebrew bible. The book tells of a woman’s story, most suggest that it is a work of a
female author. The narrator expresses sympathy towards women, but this does not mean that a
man couldn’t express the same pity to their betrothed situation. Although some argue that the
book may also be written as David’s apology for kingship during his lifetime, expressing a strong
disposition towards women.

World within the story

The story was written in a narrative style, as it explains the story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. The
overall theme is about redemption for what was lost, as seen in the actions of Boaz who saved
Ruth. The interplay of God’s purpose and will is revealed as the story progresses. Evident in the
way God’s providence is observed throughout the story even without the author’s explicit
mention of His name. Additionally, the symmetry and reversal of the tragedies between the
opening and closing of the story weaved all of the pieces of the scene altogether.

World in front of the story

The theological theme that I was able to absorb from the story is “Covenant loyalty” or loving
kindness that implies loyalty. As Ruth and Boaz show loyalty and kindness to their members
without expectations, instead because they genuinely care and show interest to the other. The
Story shows us, readers the importance of loyalty, love, and faith even in the midst of chaos.
That even in times of despair doing what’s right and obeying God must come first, it also tells us
The book that someone not blood related or different, even an enemy can be used by God and
bring blessings to someone's life as it all depends on a person's commitment and faith to God.
