Earth & Environmental Science

Quarter 4 – MELC 3

Name: Dweyne Loren O. Riomalos Grade & Section: Grade 7 – Diophantus

Activity 1
1. POLLUTION – disposition of waste to land and water creating nuisance to
the environment
2. GLOBAL WARMING - increase of carbon dioxide caused by combustion of
fossil fuels
3. DEFORESTATION – deliberate cutting trees without replacing it
4. OZONE DEPLETION – the gradual thinning of the ozone layer due to
release of too much gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other
activities
5. CLIMATE CHANGE – global phenomenon of climate transformation
characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet

Guide Questions
1. What is common among the five environmental problems? What causes
these problems?
The common among the five environmental problems are bad or the
unhealthy state of the world. We human beings causes these problems.
2. If these problems keep on existing in planet Earth, what might happen in
the future?
The world might end up dead. Everything will die, the plants, animals, and
the environment. If humans still focus on building a better life for our
present, we are starting to ignore our future or there would really be no
future.
3. How can you minimize these environmental problems?
I can minimize these environmental problems by recycling our wastes
properly.
Activity 2
1. Humans require space and lots of it whether it is for farmland or industries
resulting to clear-cutting. How is clear-cutting or total logging of trees result
in severely damaged ecosystem?
Clear – cutting or total logging of trees of trees severely damages the
ecosystem because of the loss of acres of trees. Trees play big role in our
ecosystem. Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen,
improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil,
and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in
carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe.

2. What are other human activities that produce waste which can pollute the
environment? Cite at least two and be able to explain its effect.

Many things that are useful to people produce pollution. Cars spew pollutants
from their exhaust pipes. Burning coal to create electricity pollutes the air.
Industries and homes generate garbage and sewage that can pollute the
land and water.
3. What are the consequences of extreme weather patterns to you and the
environment?
Extreme weather or extreme climate events includes unexpected,
unusual, severe, or unseasonal weather; weather at the extremes of the
historical distribution—the range that has been seen in the past. An example
of this extreme weather is the Heat Weather. Severe heat weather can
damage populations and crops due to
potential dehydration or hyperthermia, heat cramps, heat
expansion and heat stroke. Dried soils are more susceptible to erosion,
decreasing lands available for agriculture. Outbreaks of wildfires can
increase in frequency as dry vegetation has increased likeliness of igniting.
The evaporation of bodies of water can be devastating to marine
populations, decreasing the size of the habitats available as well as the
amount of nutrition present within the waters.
4. How does deforestation affect the environment?
The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change,
desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.
5. What is the direct effect to the health of humans as the ozone layer
continues to deplete?
Ozone layer depletion causes increased UV radiation levels at the Earth's
surface, which is damaging to human health. Negative effects include
increases in certain types of skin cancers, eye cataracts and immune
deficiency disorders.
6. What is your role as a student and being part of the human race to the
impacts created to the environment?
As a student and human, we need to interact with the environment to obtain
our food, water, fuel, medicines, building materials and many other things.
Advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the
environment for our benefit, but we have also introduced pollution and
caused environmental damage.

Reflection
As a student, how can you help minimize the negative impacts of humans to
the environment?
For our Environment

Our Environment and Ecosystem

Was as beautiful as it can be
You can smell sweet fragrance of flowers
Blue, clean ocean and trees.

But since the humans overpopulated

Destruction and abuse started lurking our planet
Population, Global Warming
Climate Change, Deforestation
And the Gradual thinning of the Earth's Ozone Layer.

Humans started the depleting

Demolition, Ruination
That will slowly lead to the end of the world
But as students how can we lessen the risk?
Being simple students of the society?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

If possible, we can use a cycle
Or walking
Instead of using cars
When our destinations not even that far.

Tree planting, expanding the coral reefs

For the sake of the animals and insects
For the best of our consumptions
And for the health of our surroundings.

Energy should be used efficiently

Conservation of Water
Recyclable things are cheaper
I am sure we will succeed, eventually.

Starting from little ways

Before everything will be gone nowadays
Gone without a trace
Because of our selfish ways.

Bringing back to what we taken from Mother Nature

We shall protect and nurture
For Improvement and Development
Of our Environment.
