2.

Hello, My name is Hoang and today I’ll show you the findings and outcomes I have
gathered throughout this semester of PICAP.

3. The first project I was tasked with was a case study

4. What I had to do was to re-design the art studio which is basically the home of us CCP
students

5. The group work was conducted by me and 4 of my friends. For the work structure, you
can access it here, on Figma

6. First of all the 5 of us sat together and laid out all of the pros and cons of the art studio
that we experienced

7. Then we interviewed other studio users about their experiences

8. Next part we observed the dry area. We found out that The sections are divided
inappropriately, the tables are too high, and the lecturing area is inconvenient.

9. Then the wet area was observed. We concluded that there is limited space and there is
only 1 table which is not big enough for the users

10 11. And we came up with some solutions

12. Here is the chosen concept 1

13. And this is the chosen concept 2

14. I have learned a lot in this project. I found out that communication is key to every group
work. This project has taught me social skills as I have to do group work, conduct interviews,
and present my work.

15. The next task was doing tesselations

16. Again, the work structure can be accessed here

17. I chose the scanography method rather than basic photo shooting because
scanographies create very interesting patterns

18. In This part I extracted the shape from the scanography

19. And the same for this part

20 21 22 Here are some of my grouping and orientation tests

23 I chose the theme of space or galaxy for the first theme because the pattern looks like the
stripes of the Milky Way. The second theme is eyes
24. Here are the mockups to which I applied the pattern of theme 1 with different orientations

25. This is the second theme which is eyes and these are its mockups. Sorry, this should be
saying theme 2, I made a mistake editing it

26. What this part had taught is valuable for me - a graphic designer. It taught me how to
create interesting patterns. However what I lacked in this part was limited experimentation, I
did not have much choice in choosing the best tiles. I need further practice in integrating
complex patterns seamlessly into the design

27. Now is the second part of the portfolio

28. In this part, I applied the colors to my patterns

29. First of all, I experimented with a cool color palette

30. Then comes the part when I tested out the language of the warm palette

31. For The first theme of space, I chose a cool color palette because obviously a calm color
expresses the silence of the galaxy.

32. This is the pattern when applying mockups

33. For the second theme of eyes, I applied red colors which make the theme show more
personality and intensity

34. Here are the theme’s mock-ups

35. In this task, I learned about the language of each color and how it expressed different
emotions. For the area of improvement, I need to develop a deeper understanding of how
color and pattern choices can be tailored to specific target audiences. And further developing
skills in digital tools and software for color manipulation

36. Last but not least in the visual grammar part which I enjoyed doing the most.

37. For the task, I chose 3 tiles to extract and dissect the shape, I used Illustrator to take out
parts of the tiles, these are only the basic extractions, not the visual vocab yet

38. Then, I further disintegrate the shapes (like this) and split them into 3 groups: group 1 -
long and thin shapes, group 2 - geometrical shapes, and group 3 organic shapes.

39. The topic I have chosen for the final pictograms is chess tactics. Using the visual
grammar, I played around with them and combined them into the shapes of chess elements

40. This is the idea mood board, again, you can access the link here
41. The process was: first, I designed the chess piece from geometrical blocks and used the
grid system. Then, inspired by the shape of the visual vocab, I combine the 2 to create the
final icon

42. After making all 6 chess pieces, I combine some of them. I finalized it by coloring and
adding details

43. The color palette was mostly inspired by the color of the Buv chess club

44. The polar techniques that I applied for this pictogram were activeness, symmetry,
asymmetry, predictability, and juxtaposition

45. For this one is exaggeration, asymmetry, and spontaneity.

46. The final pictogram of the chess tactics consists of Battery, Royal Fork, Fianchetto,
Castle, and Promotion

47. Here is the final poster 1 for the pictograms, initially I wanted to make a book cover but it
could look like a good poster to promote the school’s chess club. I also added the knowledge
of Cubism learned from art history to the poster.

48. Here are its mockups

49. I made a brochure for the 2nd poster. Initially, I made a poster that explains the definition
of chess tactics but making it in the form of a brochure is much more practical.

50. More of its mockups

51 And here area some room for growth: I need Further Experimentation: Continued
exploration and experimentation with visual vocabulary and polar techniques could be more
innovative design solutions. I should invest more time in researching deeper into the
fundamentals of poster design would strengthen my execution skills.

52. And that's the end, thank you so much for tuning in
