SOLVING: Age Word Problem/Mixture Problem and Distance, Rate and Time Problems

BSMAR E 1 CHARLIE

MOLINA, NHEL JOY P.

Carmen is 12 years older than David. Five years ago, the sum of their ages was 28. How old are they
now?

Person Current Age Change

Age (-5)

Carmen (C) D + 12 D +12 -5

D+7

David (D) D D-5

The last statement gives us the equation to solve:

Five years ago, the sum of their ages was 28

( D + 7 ) + ( D - 5 ) = 28

2D + 2 = 28

-2 -2

2D = 26

D = 26/2 =13

Therefore, Carmen is David’s age (13) + 12 years = 25 years old.

MIXTURE PROBLEM

A candy store owner wants to mix two types of candy: one costing $2 per pound and another costing $3
per pound. She wants to create 50 pounds of a mixture costing $2.50 per pound. How many pounds of
each type of candy should she use?

Step 1: Define Variables

Let

- x = pounds of $2 candy

- y = pounds of $3 candy

Step 2: Set up Equations

- Equation 1 (Total Weight): x + y = 50

- Equation 2 (Total Cost): 2x + 3y = 2.50 * 50 (The total cost is $2.50 per pound * 50 pounds = $125)

Step 3: Solve the System of Equations

Again, we can use substitution or elimination.

Let's use elimination:

Multiply Equation 1 by -2: -2x - 2y = -100

Add this to Equation 2:

(-2x - 2y) + (2x + 3y) = -100 + 125

y = 25

Substitute the value of y back into Equation 1:

x + 25 = 50

x = 25

: Answer

The candy store owner should mix 25 pounds of the $2 candy and 25 pounds of the $3 candy.
DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEMS

- Problem: Two cars leave the same point at the same time, traveling in opposite directions. One car
travels at 40 mph, the other at 50 mph. How far apart are they after 3 hours?

- Solution:

- Distance of car 1: 40 mph × 3 hours = 120 miles

- Distance of car 2: 50 mph × 3 hours = 150 miles

- Total distance apart: 120 miles + 150 miles = 270 miles

- Answer: 270 miles

1.How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: I'm watching in YouTube then I'm analyse the problem, then I tried my best to make my own
problem and solutions.

2.How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned inthe 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: These problem types are frequently used in algebra courses to practice setting up and solving
equations.

3.What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered uponconstructing the problem?

Answer: The problem types demand careful reading, logical reasoning, and the ability to apply
appropriate mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios.

4.How did you arrive at your answers

Answer: I'm trying my best formula to get a real answers in a problem

5.Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed problems.
