MATHEMATICAL LEARNING

Julia Caroline Silva

Carolina Pereira Camilo

Milena Sartori de Albuquerque

Summary: This article addresses mathematical skills and how to teach them clearly and
effectively to students in the initial grades, using videos by teacher Raquel Pierini,
inspired by the works of Gisele Farias. The objective is to present concrete ideas for
teachers, especially in mathematics, aiming to develop effective lesson plans and ensure
student learning success . It proposes new methodologies, such as games, concrete
materials and innovative technologies, to prepare children's thinking for life and future
careers. Furthermore, it presents strategies that integrate mathematics into students'
reality, valuing their prior knowledge and improving pedagogical practice. The
effectiveness of these methodologies is discussed, the reasons for using them and the
contexts in which they can be applied, avoiding mechanical activities that do not
contribute to the development of teachers. The article also emphasizes the importance of
adapting teaching to the individual needs of students , recognizing that each child has
their own learning pace and comprehension style. Through practical examples and case
studies, it demonstrates how these approaches can be implemented in the classroom,
providing a more dynamic and engaging learning environment. Furthermore, it
highlights the relevance of training qualified and up-to-date teachers who can use these
methodologies effectively, ensuring that teaching mathematics is a meaningful and
transformative experience for students.

INTRODUCTION
Mathematics has several fundamental concepts, such as numbering, operations and
geometric shapes. Furthermore, it covers a wide range of uses and contexts, being
always present in our daily lives. The generic thought that mathematics is just about
numbers and complex operations neglects the learning process of this subject.
Therefore, it is crucial to seek intelligent approaches to teaching it in the initial grades,
seeking to contextualize this subject before applying it in practice.
There are numerous studies that indicate that many people are disinterested in and,
above all, afraid of mathematics, a phobia known as “Mathematics anxiety”. The
evolution of methodologies for fully teaching mathematics has become essential, as
there needs to be an effective way of applying the content to achieve successful
learning. These methodologies must be connected to children's reality, aiming to
facilitate learning and prepare students for successful future careers.
Pedagogical strategies that integrate mathematics into students' daily lives are discussed,
valuing their prior knowledge before actually introducing the subject. This approach not
only improves teaching effectiveness, but also makes mathematics more accessible and
less intimidating for students. According to Boaler (2016), “mathematics should be
taught in a way that students can see its relevance and application in the real world,
which increases engagement and understanding”.
Furthermore, the use of educational technologies has shown promising results in
improving mathematics teaching. Digital tools, such as educational apps and games, can
make learning more interactive and fun, helping to reduce anxiety and increase students'
confidence. Studies indicate that the use of technologies in teaching mathematics can
significantly improve student performance (Smith, 2020). In short, mathematics is an
essential discipline that goes beyond numbers and complex operations. Innovative
pedagogical approaches and the use of educational technologies are fundamental to
making mathematics teaching more effective and accessible. By connecting
mathematics to students' daily lives and valuing their prior knowledge, we can facilitate
learning and prepare students for a successful future.

Development :
Applying good mathematics teaching methodologies makes a big difference in the
beginning of learning for a child who does not yet have much knowledge of the subject.
According to Giselle Farias, it is important to improve mathematics education in Brazil.
Firstly, at the beginning of everything, it is necessary to value the child's prior
knowledge, that is, question what they understand about the term “mathematics”.
It is essential to encourage students to express their thoughts and accept them in a
positive way, as every way of thinking is valid. It is necessary to treat this part
delicately when applied, as students need to feel free and, at the same time, not be afraid
to say what they think. Obviously, there cannot be judgments on the part of the teacher
when such an approach is chosen, but there may be judgments on the part of other
colleagues, as they are children. Therefore, it is also necessary for the teacher to know
how to work this method, demanding respect from everyone in the classroom. Working
on mental calculation is one of the ways to develop a child's logical thinking, according
to Giselle Farias, bringing techniques and strategies that require a lot of practice. This
will help the child's logical reasoning and, in the future, in solving more elaborate
operations. When developed primarily, it will become a habit that will accompany the
student in the process of continuous learning. Continuing with this purpose, there is also
written calculation that is taught together with the previous one. Which one is chosen to
introduce first will vary depending on each teacher and the method they wish to apply,
but both calculations should be taught in the classroom. The written calculation boils
down to something more structured and systematic, all done on a sheet of paper with a
pen. The student prepares his account, organizing the columns of numbers, aligning the
decimal places. All of this needs patience and time to be done, and is consequently a
more accurate way of solving accounts than mental calculation. Another important point
to include in these methods mentioned above is working on the student's error. We need
to normalize this, because we know that we are flawed and our mind is not 100%
accurate in everything. Furthermore, it is part of the learning process. The teacher must
accept such a mistake, find out where this error comes from and why, so that the student
improves so as not to make mistakes again. Generally, the educator is willing to look for
a different way to apply it to the student that may be more effective and make more
sense in their mind.
Professor Gisele also showed ideas on how to bring mathematics into children's lives in
a practical way, with a focus on how teaching materials can help students' development.
Initially, she encourages students to avoid mechanical activities and start recording their
doubts, difficulties and achievements in relation to mathematics classes, placing an
emphasis on learning with frequent reflections.
In the second video, the teacher shows the importance of teaching materials in teaching
mathematics to children, bringing out the difference between structured and
unstructured materials, highlighting the importance of the Golden Material as a
fundamental aid for mathematics education, presenting the main concepts in a clear for
students to understand. The teacher also explored other types of concrete materials that
serve as practical aids in learning, highlighting their main functions, which are:
Logic Blocks: Help with the development of logic, classification and sequencing.
Tangram: It is a type of puzzle that also develops logic, but with a greater focus on
geometric concepts.
Abacus: Used to teach arithmetic operations and decimal concepts.
Geoplane: Widely used to teach geometry, fractions, symmetry and similarities.
Toy Money: Helps with understanding the decimal system, linking children's daily lives
to mathematics

Conclusions :
The teaching of mathematics is essential for the cognitive development of students and
must be approached in a way that reduces anxiety and increases engagement. Through
this study we can emphasize the importance of adapting mathematics to students' daily
lives and using innovative methodologies to make the learning more accessible and less
intimidating, thus valuing students' prior knowledge and normalizing their mistakes as
part of the learning process, creating a more positive and efficient educational
environment, taking as a conclusion that these approaches not only facilitate learning,
but also prepare students students for future academic and professional challenges .
