Assignment - 1

1 (a) . The four coplanar force are acting at a point as shown in fig 1 (a). One of
the forces is unknown and its magnitude is shown by P. The resultant is having a
magnitude of 500N and is acting along x-axis. Determine the unknown force P
and its inclination with x-axis

1 (b) Two cable which have known tensions are attached to the top of a tower
AB. A third cable AC is used as a Guy Wire as shown in fig 1 (b) . Determine
the tension in AC if the resultant of the force exerted at A by the three cable acts
vertically downwards.

2. A pole is held in place by three cable. If the force of each cable acting on the
pole is shown, determine the position (x,y,0) for fixing cable DC. So that the
resultant force exerted on the pole is directed along its axis.

3(a). Determine the stretch in each spring for equilibrium of the weight W = 40
N block as shown in Fig. Q.11 (a). The springs are in equilibrium position. The
stiffness of each spring is given as : k1 = 40 N/m, k2 =50 N/m and k3 = 60 N/m.

3 (b). Three smooth pipe each weighing 20kN and of diameter 60cm are to be
placed in a rectangular channel with horizontal base as shown in fig 3(b).
Calculate the reactions at the points of contact between the pipes and between
the channel and the pipes. Take, width of channel as 160cm

4 . A transmission tower is held by three guy wires attached to a pin at A and

anchored by bolts at B,C and D. if the tension in wire AB is 3.6kN . Determine
the vertical force P exerted by the tower on the point at A.

determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the forces exerted at A
by the two cables.
