Classifying Matter Using Particle Models 1

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All matter contains atoms. In some
matter, atoms are joined together by chemical bonds to form molecules.
Matter can be classified as an element or a compound:
• Elements are made of only one type of atom.
• Compounds have two or more types of atoms joined together by chemical bonds.

To help us classify A B C
matter, we use particle
models like the ones
shown to the right.
Models help us imagine
what particles of matter,
such as atoms and
molecules, look like.
