Impossible Coin
through Hole
The magician asks if anyone thinks it’s possible to push a large coin
through a small hole in a piece of paper, without tearing the paper.
No one thinks the magician can do it...it seems impossible! The
magician then proceeds to do the impossible and push the large
coin through the small hole, amazing everyone!
This trick is amazing because it seems impossible for such a large
coin to fit through such a small hole! Your audience will think it
can’t be done...and will be amazed when you do it!
Supplies: 2p, 1p, scissors, piece of paper, pencil

1. Begin by cutting a small square of

paper. In the center of the square,
trace the penny. With the help of an
adult, carefully cut out the circle,
making small hole. You’re now ready
to begin!

2. Ask if anyone in the audience

thinks you can put the 2p through the
hole without tearing the paper. It
looks impossible! (Unless they’ve
seen it before, they won’t know how
it’s done!)

www.allansmagic.com
5

3. Fold the paper in half, with the

hole facing down. Drop the coin into
the paper so it’s resting in the hole.

4. Very carefully, hold the sides of

the paper with your fingers and bend
the paper up. This will slightly stretch
the hole. Slowly continue to bend the
paper upward until the coin drops
through the hole.

5. Open the paper to show that you

didn’t tear the hole!

Pass the paper and coin around for

the audience to inspect.

Tips:
This trick can also be done with other coins, for example you can use
£2 coin and a £1 coin.

Crazy Card Balance

You place the edge of a card on the table and put a plastic cup on
top. After carefully balancing the plastic cup on the card, you
remove your hands. The cup stays balanced on the card!
The gimmick used in this trick is very clever because it really looks
like the cup is balanced on the edge of a playing card!
Supplies: Two playing cards, glue (or tape), plastic cup

1. To perform this trick, you’ll need to

construct a secret “card-balancing
gimmick.” Fold a playing card in half
length-wise.

2. Glue one of the sides onto the back of

the other playing card, making sure to
carefully line up the corners. This makes a
card with a secret support flap in back that
allows the card to stand up by itself.

3. Show your audience the front of the

card, making sure to hold the secret flap
closed with your fingers. Make sure to
practice this move several times before
performing.

4. Put the card on the table. With your

other hand, put the cup on top of the card.
The front of the card should face the
audience directly (if the audience is even a
little on the side, they might see the secret
flap).

www.allansmagic.com
7

5. As you balance the cup on the card,

secretly open the flap so it’s pointing
straight back. With the secret flap open,
you will be able to balance the cup
perfectly.

6. Slowly remove your hands. To the

audience, it will seem like the cup is
balancing on the card, and the card is
balancing on the table!

7. To end the trick, grab the cup with one

hand and the card with the other. The
hand that grabs the card should, in one
motion, close the flap and pick up the card
at the same time. The card and cup can be
freely shown, just make sure to hold the
secret flap closed!

Tips:
This trick takes some acting to make it seem like it’s really hard to
balance the cup on the card!
You can balance almost any lightweight object on the card. Try using
paper plates, small books, toy blocks, and other small objects.

Incredible Linking
Paperclips
The magician folds a £5 note and puts two paperclips on different
parts of the note. As he pulls on the edges of the note, the
paperclips magically jump off and link together.

This trick is fun and easy to perform because it’s self-working and
can be done without any secret preparation!

Supplies: £5 note, two paperclips

1. Show the audience your £5 note

and paperclips. Fold a third of the note
toward the middle and put a paper clip
on the top edge to hold it in place.

2. Fold the other third of the £5 note in

the opposite direction and put a
paperclip on the top edge to hold it in
place. Your paper clips should be
placed like the ones in the picture.

www.allansmagic.com
9

3. Now, grip both edges of the £5 note

in your hands, and pull your hands out
and apart, until the note is stretched
out flat.

4. The paper clips will magically link

together and jump off the £5 note!
When you’re done, you can hand
everything out to be inspected by the
audience.

Tips:
It makes it seem more magical if you have the audience say a magic
word as you perform the trick.
Make sure that your audience isn’t too close as you perform the trick
so the paperclips don’t accidently hit someone as they jump off the £5
note.

The Magician Wins!

You offer to let the audience play a game by choosing envelopes.
One of the envelopes has money hidden in it and whoever picks
that one gets to keep the money. Everyone gets to choose any
envelope they want. You get the one that’s leftover, but somehow
still win the money!
Your audience will be in suspense, waiting to see who wins the
money. Of course, as the magician, you win every time!
Supplies: four empty envelopes, £5 note, marker or pen

1. Before you perform the trick,

number the envelopes 1-4. When
you’re ready to perform the trick,
spread the envelopes in your hand and
hold a £5 note behind them with your
thumbs.

2. Show the audience the envelopes

and tell them that one of the envelopes
has money in it. Say that you’re going
to let three people pick an envelope
and whoever picks the one with the
money gets to keep it.

3. Ask the first person to pick a

number one through four. Secretly use
your thumbs to move the £5 note
behind any other envelope except the
one they choose. Then, ask them to
take the envelope they chose, but not
open it yet.

www.allansmagic.com
11

4. Ask another person to choose an

envelope. No matter which one they
choose, repeat the same move with
your thumbs to keep the £5 note
hidden behind the other envelopes.

5. Do this one more time so you’re left

with the last envelope. Simply use
your thumb to move the £5 note behind
whichever envelope isn’t chosen.

6. Tell everyone to open their envelopes and see if they won! Open
the flap on your envelope and pretend to pull the £5 note out. To
make it look like you’re pulling the £5 note out of the envelope, slide it
across the back of the envelope as you pull it out. To the audience, it
will look like it came from the envelope and you won!

Tips:
When you move the £5 note behind the envelopes, try to do it without
watching your own thumbs. You might ask the person if they’re sure
that’s the one they want while you do this secret move.

The Rising Ring

You borrow a ring from someone in the audience and place it on a
pencil. The ring mysteriously begins to rise up the pencil! The ring
rises and falls at your command.
This trick is great! It really looks like the ring is floating mysteriously
up the pencil! Plus, since you can hand people the ring right after
the trick, nobody will know how it’s done!
Supplies: pencil, thread, safety pin, borrowed ring

1. Take a pencil and tie one end of a

thin thread or fishing line (about 15-20
inches long) to the eraser, and the other
end to a safety pin

Note: In the pictures here, a thick thread

is used for demonstration only. The
thread you use you should be very thin.

2. Fasten the safety pin to the front of

your pants or your belt loop.

With the thread still attached, carefully

put the pencil in your shirt or pants
pocket and you’re ready to go!

3. Begin by borrowing a ring from

someone in the audience. Take the
pencil out of your pocket and hold it in
front of you with the eraser on top.

www.allansmagic.com
13
4. Drop the ring onto the pencil (and secretly over the thread). Keep
the thread loose so the ring drops all the way down to your fingers.

5. To make the ring rise, slowly move

the pencil away from your body. This
will tighten the thread, which will move
the ring up! You can make the ring rise
and fall by simply moving the pencil
toward you or away from you.

6. When the ring reaches the top,

simply take it off and give it back to its
owner.

Tips:
To make sure people can’t see the thread, wear dark clothing or turn
down the lights in the room.

The Jumping Rubber

Band
You place a rubber band on two of your fingers, and close your
hand. When you say the magic words and open your hand, the
rubber band magically jumps off those two fingers, and onto your
other two fingers!
This is a great trick you can do anytime, without special props or
preparation. All you need is a rubber band! Plus, the audience has
fun watching a rubber band jump all by itself.
Supplies: rubber band

1. Hold your hand up with the back of

your hand facing your audience and
your palm facing you. Then, put the
rubber band around the bottom of your
first and second fingers. Tell your
audience that the rubber band will jump
all by itself to your other fingers.

2. Using your other hand, pull the rubber band out towards you and
place the tips of all four fingers inside the rubber band. Gently release
the rubber band so it’s on top of your closed fingers. Keep your thumb
out to the side.

www.allansmagic.com
15

3. To the audience, it will look like the

rubber band is still just around two
fingers.

4. Straighten your fingers (open your

hand) and the rubber band will
automatically jump to your third and
fourth fingers as if by magic!

Tips:
You can make it jump from your third and fourth fingers back to your
first and second by doing the same secret move as before.

Choose a rubber band that fits snugly around your two fingers and
isn’t too big.

Make sure that you practice the secret move so that you can do it
quickly and without drawing attention from the audience.

Stepping Through
Paper
Show someone a piece of paper and ask them if they think you can
cut a hole big enough for you to step through. Unless they know
the secret, they won’t think it’s possible!
By knowing the secret way to cut the paper, you can create a hole
big enough for you to literally step through. People will think you’re
a genius for being able to perform this amazing trick!
Supplies: scissors, half sheet of paper (5.5” x 8.5”)

1. Fold the piece of paper in half,

lengthwise.

2. Make about ten straight cuts in from

the folded edge, but make sure you don’t
cut all the way through. Stop about a half
an inch from the other side.

3. Turn the paper around and cut nine

more slits (from the open edge, this time)
between the slits you have already
made. Don’t cut between the last slits
and the outer edges.

www.allansmagic.com
17

4. Trim off the very edge of the side

that’s folded, EXCEPT for the sections at
each end.

5. After you’ve made all your cuts, your

paper should look like this:

6. Open the paper carefully, and there

will be a hole big enough for you to step
through!

Tips:
Make sure to have an adult help with the cutting.

You can also do this trick with a playing card, a note card or even a
smaller piece of paper.

To make a bigger hole in the paper, just make more cuts on each
side.

1p to Pounds
You show the audience that you have a 1p in one hand, and your
other hand is empty. You grab the penny with your empty hand and
it magically transforms into two pounds!
Have you ever wanted to make money? Well now’s your chance!
In this trick, it looks like you literally turn a 1p into two pounds!
Supplies: one 1p and two £1 coins

1. The secret to this trick is that you have

the £1 coins hidden in your hand (behind
the penny) so that your audience can’t see.
To begin, stack the two £1 coins on top of
each other and hold their edges between
your thumb and index finger.

2. Use your other hand to place the 1p flat

against the edges of the £1 coins. Hold it in
place with your thumb and tip of your
pointy finger.

3. From the front, it should look like this,

with the penny hiding the £1 coins.

Show the audience the penny (being

careful not to tilt your hand too far and
show them the £1 coins!).

www.allansmagic.com
19

4. With your other hand, reach to grab the

1p. As you do, your thumb pushes the
bottom of the penny so it lies flat
underneath the two quarters

5. Grab the stack of coins (2x £1 coins on

top, 1p on bottom) and begin to separate
the £1 coins.

6. Keeping one £1 coin in each hand,

slowly pull your hands apart to show the
audience the penny has now transformed
into two £1 coins!

7. As you show the audience the two £1

coins, carefully keep the penny hidden
behind one of the £1 coins.

8. To the audience, it looks like you just

turned a penny into two £1 coins and
literally made money!

www.allansmagic.com
20

Tips:
If it’s too hard to hold two £1 coins, try it with just one £1 coin first.

To help keep the penny hidden, put a glue dot or small piece of
double-sided tape on the back of the penny before the trick. That way
the penny won’t slide around on the back of the £1 coin when you
show it at the end.

The Vanishing
Paperclip
You show the audience a paperclip. As you put it in your other
hand, it completely disappears!
For this trick, you’ll construct a simple gimmick magicians call a
“pull.” Its name comes from the fact that it’s used to pull things up
your sleeve. You can use it to make almost any small object
disappear.
Supplies: three rubber bands, paperclip, long sleeve shirt (short
sleeves are used in the pictures below for demonstration purposes,
but you’ll want to wear long sleeves to hide the gimmick!)

1. Before you perform this trick, you’ll

need to construct a secret gimmick by
looping the rubber bands through each
other to form a chain.

2. Slide the paper clip onto one of the

ends of the chain. It should look like
this.

3. Put the other end of the chain (the

one without the paperclip) onto your
arm, and pull it up a few inches above
your elbow. You’ll want to pull your
sleeve up to get the rubber band above
your elbow. Once the rubber band is in
place, you can pull your sleeve back
down to hide the gimmick.

www.allansmagic.com
22
4. Hold the paperclip in your
fingers...you’ll feel the tension created
by the rubber bands. This tension is
what will pull the paperclip up your
sleeve.

When you’re ready to perform the trick,

show the audience the paperclip (being
sure to hide the rubber band behind your
hand). Tell them you’re going to make
the paperclip disappear.

5. Move the paperclip towards the open

palm of your other hand. As soon as it
touches your palm, let go of the
paperclip, allowing the rubber bands to
pull it up your sleeve.

PICTURES SHOW MOVES WITHOUT

THE SLEEVES FOR CLARITY !

6. You can now show both hands empty

and no one will know how you did it!

Tips:
You can make other small objects (like rings) disappear using this
same gimmick.
Make sure the opening of your sleeve is loose against your wrist. It
should be loose enough that the paperclip can easily be pulled up
your sleeve.

The Vanishing Coin

You show a coin in your hand and cover it with a cloth. One by one,
you let members of the audience reach under the cloth and feel the
coin. Once everyone in the audience has felt the coin under the
cloth, you say the magic words and pull off the cloth to show that
the coin has vanished!
This magic trick makes use of a secret audience helper, called a
“stooge”. With the help of your stooge, all your other friends will
think you made a coin vanish!
Supplies: coin, cloth or napkin (one that you can’t see through), a
secret helper

Note: Before you perform this trick, you need to enlist the help of a
friend. Tell your friend that you’re going to place a coin under a
cloth and let everyone in the audience feel it with their hands.
They’ll be the last one. When they put their hand under the cloth,
they should secretly take the coin.

1. Show your audience the coin, allowing

them to inspect it if they wish.

2. With your other hand, place the cloth

over the coin.

www.allansmagic.com
24

3. Hold the coin from the outside of the

cloth with your other hand.

4. Let several members of the audience

reach under the cloth to feel the coin and
make sure it’s still there. The last person
you let feel the coin is your secret helper!

5. Your secret helper takes the coin (and

hides it in their own hand), but acts just
like everyone else and says the coin is
still there. You’ll need to do some acting
too, pretending you’re still holding onto
the coin.

6. Say the magic words as you whisk

away the cloth to show that the coin has
vanished!

www.allansmagic.com
25
Tips:
Make sure to practice the secret move with your friend. They should
slip the coin out of your fingers smoothly so nobody sees it happen
and hide it in their hand when they bring it out from under the cloth.

The Rules of Magic

1. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Practice every trick before you show it to
anyone - even your parents! There’s an old
saying, “A good magician never tells his
secrets, and a bad magician doesn’t have to!”

2. Never Tell the Secrets!

Once people know the secret to a trick, all
the mystery is gone and the trick is ruined!
Plus, if they can do the same trick, your talent
and skill are no longer special to them. Also,
never repeat a trick for the same person or
they might find out your secret!

3. Have Fun!
Remember, magic should be fun. You
should perform magic to entertain and mystify,
not to show that you are better than others.
Always use magic to entertain people and
make them happy!

BONUS TRICKS
Reach Through Glass

You show the audience a glass and napkin. You put the napkin in
the glass, cover it with a handkerchief and seal the top by putting a
rubber band around it. Then, you reach under the handkerchief and
pull the napkin out...through the bottom of the glass!

This trick is amazing because it looks like your fingers actually

reach through glass to grab the napkin and pull it out!

Supplies: A glass or plastic cup (practice with plastic first!),

napkin, opaque handkerchief (or dark cloth), rubber band

1. Begin by holding a glass with the tips of

your fingers. Put the napkin into the glass.
The napkin should fit snuggly so it won’t
fall out when you turn the glass upside
down.

2. Pick up the handkerchief with your

other hand and hold it in front of the glass
so the audience can’t see it.

www.allansmagic.com
28

3. While the handkerchief is hiding the glass, secretly turn the glass
over in your hand so it’s completely upside down. Do this by pivoting
the glass between your thumbs and fingers, allowing it to swing down.

4. Just as the glass turns over, your other

hand finishes covering the glass with the
handkerchief and holds it from the outside.

5. Pick up the rubber band and put it

around the “top” of the glass. (It’s really
the bottom, but the audience doesn’t know
that!)

www.allansmagic.com
29

6. With your empty hand, reach up under

the handkerchief and slowly pull the
napkin out of the glass. To the audience, it
looks like you reached through the bottom
of the glass and pulled out the napkin!

7. Remove the rubber band and begin to

remove the handkerchief. As you do, turn
the glass right side up, being sure to keep
it hidden from the audience’s view the
entire time. Remove the handkerchief
completely and show the glass.

Tips:
This whole trick depends on the secret move of turning the glass
upside down while it’s being covered by the second handkerchief. The
faster and smoother you can turn the glass upside down, the better.
Make sure to practice this part a lot!

Multiplying Candy

You show the audience two bowls and a few pieces of candy. After
putting the candy in one of the bowls, you place the other bowl on
top and give it a few magic turns. When you take the bowl off the
top, the candy has doubled!

What’s better than candy? More candy! In this "sweet” trick, you
take something everyone loves (candy!) and make more of it.

Supplies: several small pieces of candy (about 6-8), two paper or

plastic bowls, glue or double-sided tape

1. To prepare for this trick, glue several

(3-4) pieces of candy in random places in
the bottom of one of the bowls. After the
glue has dried, place this bowl upside
down on the table. (This bowl will be
your lid later in the trick.)

2. When you’re ready to perform the trick,

show the audience the empty bowl and
put a few (3-4) pieces of candy in the
bottom.

www.allansmagic.com
31

3. Cover the bowl with the lid, being

careful not to show the hidden candy
glued inside it.

4. Holding the bowls together, turn them over 3 or 5 times while

saying the magic words. Make sure and turn them an odd number of
times so all the candy ends up in the bottom.

5. Remove the lid (the top bowl) to reveal

the candy has multiplied!

www.allansmagic.com
32

6. If you want, you can even pass out a

few pieces of candy (just make sure not to
pull off ones that are glued to the bottom).

Tips:
You can also perform this trick with coins, beads, or other small
objects.

When turning the bowls, hold them together carefully so they don’t
come apart.

How to Ninja Slice a Banana

You show the audience a banana and tell them you’re going to
magically ninja chop it without breaking the peel. You use your
hand to “ninja slice” the banana three times. The audience doesn’t
believe it’s done, until you peel the banana and reveal it’s been
chopped in three places.

Your audience might think you really do have secret magic ninja
powers after you perform this trick. Performing this trick takes only
a little preparation and you can even eat the banana after it’s done.

Supplies: needle or pin, banana

*This trick uses a sharp object, and requires adult supervision.

1. Before you perform this trick,

carefully insert a needle or pin into the
skin of a banana. Slice the banana by
moving the needle from side to side, in
an arc pattern. Make three slices in the
banana, dividing it into four even pieces.
The needle is thin enough to cut the
banana, but it leaves a small enough hole
in the peel that people won’t be able to
see it!

2. During your performance, show your

audience the banana and tell them you’re
going to slice it using magic, without
peeling it. Remember where you made
the cuts with the needle and pretend to
magically ninja slice the banana in the
same spots.

www.allansmagic.com
34

3. Announce that the banana is magically

chopped into pieces.

Unpeel the banana and show the

audience the pieces!

4. You can take out pieces of the banana

and even share them with the audience if
you want.

Tips:
Lots of magic is just acting so make sure to act like you are really
ninja slicing the banana using magic.

You can cut the banana in as many pieces as you want, just remember
how many pieces you cut so you know how many magic “ninja slices”
to make.
