Course description: The study of medical terminology and vocabulary introduces students to the language of medicine. Students
will gain an understanding of basic elements, rules of building; analyzing medical terms including prefixes,
suffixes, word roots, medical abbreviations and acronyms. In addition to that; student will define, interpret,
and pronounce medical terms and common abbreviations applicable to the health care system. The
knowledge and skills gained in this course will provide students with a deeper understanding of the
application of the language of health in their routine activities.
Course objective: At the end of this course students will be able to:
• Define basic medical terminologies
• Identify the component parts of medical terms
• Apply basic prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms to build medical terms
• Relate the terminology to the names, locations, and functions of the major organs of the body systems
• Describe the terms utilized in disease classification and coding
• Define basic terms and abbreviations used in documenting health records
• Identify basic principles of NCOD (National Classification of Disease).
• Illustrate NCOD (National Classification of Disease) and other classification.
• Identifying Healthcare Code Sets & their Classifications
• Explain health data standards

Assessment Mechanisms: Students will be assessed by having Continuous Assessment that holds 50% of the total
mark and the remaining 50 % by having final examination. Arrangement of the assessment methods looks like the
