Assignment-1 (Cam and Follower Mechanisms)

Machine Dynamics
B.Tech. 5th Sem (Mechanical)
Submission Date: 05-08-2022
Q1: Draw the profile of a cam, operating a knife edge follower when axis of follower passes through the axis
of camshaft from the following data
• Follower to dwell for 900,
• Follower to move outwards through 40mm during 900 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for 900 of the cam rotation,
• Follower to return to its original position during next 900 ,
The displacement of the follower is to take place with uniform velocity during both outward and return
strokes. The least radius of cam is 50mm.
Q2.Draw the profile of a cam, operating a knife edge follower when axis of follower passes through the axis
of camshaft from the following data
• Follower to move outwards through 40mm during 600 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for next 450 ,
• Follower to return to its original position during next 900 ,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
The displacement of the follower is to take place with Uniform velocity during both outward and return
strokes. The least radius of cam is 50mm. If cam rotates at 300 RPM, determine the maximum velocity
and acceleration of the follower during outward and return strokes.
Q3.Draw the profile of a cam, operating a knife edge follower when axis of follower is not passing through
the axis of cam but is offset by 20mm from axis of camshaft, from the following data
• Follower to move outwards through 40mm during 600 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for next 450 ,
• Follower to return to its original position during next 900 ,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
The displacement of the follower is to take place with SHM during both outward and return strokes. The
least radius of cam is 50mm. If cam rotates at 300 RPM, determine the maximum velocity and acceleration
of the follower during outward and return strokes.
Q4.A cam with 40mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1200 RPM and has
to give the following motion to a roller follower 16mm in diameter.
• Follower to complete outward stroke of 25mm during 1200 of cam rotation with uniform acceleration
and retardation,
• Follower to dwell for next 600 of cam rotation,
• Follower to return to its original position during 900 of cam rotation with uniform acceleration and
retardation,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
Draw the profile of a cam if the axis of follower passes through the axis of cam. Determine the maximum
velocity and uniform acceleration of the follower during outward and return strokes.
Q5.Draw the profile of a cam, operating a knife edge follower from the following data
• Follower to move outwards through 20mm during 1200 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for next 600 ,
• Follower to return to its original position during next 900 ,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
Cam is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 500 RPM. The least radius of cam is 40mm and axis of
follower is offset 15mm from axis of the camshaft and the displacement of follower is to take place with
uniform and equal acceleration and retardation on both the outward and return strokes. Determine
Maximum velocity of follower, Maximum acceleration during outward and return strokes.
Q6.Draw the profile of a cam, operating a knife edge follower when axis of follower, from the following data
• Follower to move outwards through 30mm with Uniform acceleration ring 1200 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for next 600 ,
• Follower to return to its original position with uniform Retardation during next 900 ,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
The least radius of cam is 20mm and cam rotates at 240 RPM. Determine the max imum velocity and
acceleration of the follower during outward and return strokes.
Q7.Draw the profile of a cam from the following data:
• Least radius of cam = 40mm
• Angle of ascend = 480
• Angle of dwell between ascend and descend = 420
• Angle of descend = 600
• The lift of follower = 40mm
• Diameter of roller = 30mm
• Distance between follower axis and cam axis = 20mm
The cam rotates at 360 RPM, anticlockwise. The follower moves with SHM during ascend and uniform
acceleration and retardation during descend.
Q8.Draw the profile of a cam to give the following motion to the reciprocating follower with a flat contact
face
• Follower to move outwards through 20mm during 1200 of cam rotation,
• Follower to dwell for next 300 ,
• Follower to return to its original position during next 1200,
• Follower to dwell for rest of the cam rotation,
The least radius of cam is 25mm and flat face follower is at right angle to the line of stroke of follower. The
outward and return strokes of the follower are to take place with SHM.
Q9 (a). What is cam? List various applications of cams, draw a cam profile and mark the following terms on
it: pitch point, trace point, prime circle, pressure angle, pitch curve and basic circle.
Q9 (b). Compare the performance of knife edge, roller and mushroom followers. Which follower programme
do you recommend for a high speed cam and why?
Q9 (c). What are different types of follower? Classify and explain them with the help of line diagrams,
according to the motion of the follower, location of axis of follower and according to the shape of that part
which is in contact with the cam.
Q10. Draw the displacement, velocity and acceleration diagrams for a follower when it moves with S.H.M.
Derive the expression for velocity and acceleration during out stroke and return stroke of the follower.
