Assignment-3(Bal.

Rotating Mass)
Machine Dynamics
B.Tech. 5th Sem (Mechanical)
Submission Date: 21-11-2022
1-A disturbing mass 600 kg is attached to a shaft. The shaft is rotating at a uniform angular velocity ω
rad/s and the distance of the C.G. of the disturbing mass from the axis of rotation is 270 mm. the
disturbing mass is to be balanced by two masses in two different planes. The distance of the C.G. of the
balancing masses from the axis of rotation is 450 mm each. The distances between two planes of the
balancing masses is 1.5 m and the distance between the plane of disturbing mass and one of the planes of
the balancing masses is 300 mm. determine :
(i) the distance between the plane of disturbing mass and the plane of the other balancing mass.
(ii) Magnitude of balancing masses when:
(a) the planes of balancing masses are on the same side of the plane of disturbing mass,
(b) the planes of balancing masses are on either side of the plane of disturbing mass.

2- Four masses 200 kg, 300 kg, 240 kg and 260 kg are attached to a shaft. These masses are revolving at
radii 270 mm, 210 mm, 300 mm and 360 mm respectively in planes measured from A1 at 270 mm, 420
mm and 720 mm respectively. The angles measured anticlockwise are m1 to m2, 45°, m2 and m3, 75°,
m3 and m4, 135° and the distance between planes L and M in which the balance masses are to be placed
is 500 mm. the distance between planes A1 and L is 120 mm, M and A4 is 100 mm. if the balancing
masses revolve at a radius of 72 mm, find their magnitude and angular positions.

3- A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C and D which are completely balanced. The masses B, C,
and D are 50kg, 80 kg and 70 kg respectively. The masses C and D make angles of 90° and 195°
respectively with mass B in the same sense. The masses A, B, C and D are concentrated at radius 75 mm,
100 mm, 50 mm and 90 mm respectively. The plane of rotation of masses B and C are 250 mm apart.
Determine: (i) the mass A and its angular position, (ii) the position of planes of A and D.
4- A mass is attached to a shaft which is rotating at an angular speed of ω rad/s. describe the procedure
of balancing this mass by: (i) a single mass only, (ii) two masses in different planes.

5-A number of masses (say four masses) are attached to a shaft which is rotating at an angular speed of ω
rad/s. if all the masses are in the same plane, then describe the analytical method of balancing these four
masses by a single mass only.

6- For a reciprocating engine, prove that

(i) Maximum value of secondary disturbing force = (primary disturbing force)/n, where n = ratio of length
of connecting rod to crank length.
(ii) For one revolution of crank, the maximum value of primary force occurs two times whereas the
maximum value of secondary force occurs four times.

7- Explain the term’ partial balancing of primary force’? Why is it necessary?

8- Explain the procedure of:

(i) Primary balancing of multi cylinder in line engine, and
(ii) Secondary balancing of multi cylinder in line engine.

9-.Explain in detail the procedure of balancing multi cylinder radial engine by direct and reverse crank
method.

10- A two cylinder engine with the cranks at 180° and the cylinders on the same side of the crank shaft
centre line as shown in Fig.14.10. if the crank of the first cylinder , makes an angle of 60° with I.D.C. and
the reciprocating masses, crank lengths and connecting rod lengths are identical for each cylinder, then, to
what extent the engine is balanced for :
(i) Primary and secondary forces and
(ii) Primary and secondary couples.
