1-What do you mean by ‘balancing of reciprocating engine’?

2-Explain the term primary disturbing force and secondary disturbing force.
3- For a reciprocating engine, prove that
(i) Maximum value of secondary disturbing force = (primary disturbing force)/n, where n = ratio of length
of connecting rod to crank length.
(ii) For one revolution of crank, the maximum value of primary force occurs two times whereas the
maximum value of secondary force occurs four times.
4- Explain the term’ partial balancing of primary force’? Why is it necessary?
5- Explain the procedure of:
(i) Primary balancing of multi cylinder in line engine, and
(ii) Secondary balancing of multi cylinder in line engine.
6-.Explain in detail the procedure of balancing multi cylinder radial engine by direct and reverse crank
method.
7- Explain the procedure of balancing of V-Engine.
8- A single cylinder reciprocating engine has the following data:
Speed of engine = 120 rpm; stroke = 320 mm; mass of reciprocating parts =45 kg and mass of revolving
parts = 35 kg at crank radius. If 60 % of reciprocating parts and all the revolving parts are to be balanced,
then find:
(i) the balance mass required at a radius of 300 mm, and
(ii) the unbalanced force when the crank has rotated 60° from top dead centre.
9- A two cylinder engine with the cranks at 180° and the cylinders on the same side of the crank shaft
centre line as shown in Fig.14.10. if the crank of the first cylinder , makes an angle of 60° with I.D.C. and
the reciprocating masses, crank lengths and connecting rod lengths are identical for each cylinder, then, to
what extent the engine is balanced for :
(i) Primary and secondary forces and
(ii) Primary and secondary couples.

1
10-A 90° -V engine has two cylinders which are placed symmetrically. The two connecting rods operate a
common crank. The lengths of connecting rods are 320 mm each and crank radius is 80 mm. the
reciprocating mass per cylinder is 12 kg. if the engine speed is 600 rpm, then find the resultant primary
and resultant secondary forces. Also find the maximum resultant secondary force.
