Verdict: 1 an official decision made in a court of law, especially about whether


someone is guilty of a crime or how a death happened ex: The verdict was ‘not
guilty’.
2. Hideously: extremely unpleasant or ugly ex: Her face was hideously scarred.

minimalist: a style of art, design, music etc that uses only a very few simple ideas
or patterns ex: minimalist Christmas decorations
3. slew: to turn or slide in a different direction suddenly and violently, or to make

a vehicle do this. ex: I lost control of the car and it slewed sideways into the ditch.
4. iterations: to say or do something again ex: The process is iterated until

a convincing agreement is reached


5. sleek: object that is sleek has a smooth attractive shape. ex: the sleek lines of the new

Mercedes.
6. radical: a radical change or difference is very big and important. Ex: There are

radical differences between the two organizations.


7. flattery: praise that you do not really mean. → flattery will get you

everywhere/nowhere
8. seminal: a seminal article, book etc. is important, and influences the way

things develop in the future ex: a seminal study of eighteenth-century France


9. fuss: anxious behaviour or activity that is usually about unimportant things ex: James

said he’d better be getting back or there’d be a fuss.


10. to a T: perfectly or exactly ex: That dress suits you to a T.

brimming: full to the max.


11. zeitgeist: the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the

ideas and beliefs of the time. Ex: "the story captured the zeitgeist of the late 1960s"
12. genie: magical creature in old Arabian stories that will do what you want when you

call it. Ex:→ let the genie out of the bottle


13. novel: not like anything known before, and unusual or interesting ex: novel

idea/approach/method etc
14. underwhelming: you do not think it is impressive. Ex: We were underwhelmed by

the latest version of the software.


15. deviate: to change what you are doing so that you are not following an expected plan,

idea, or type of behaviour – deviate from – ex: The plane had to deviate from its
normal flight path.
16. scoff: to laugh at a person or idea, and talk about them in a way that shows you think

they are stupidscoff at ex: David scoffed at her fears


17. steer clear: to avoid someone or something unpleasant or difficult ex: Jo tried to

steer clear of political issues.


18. the last straw: the last problem in a series of problems that finally makes you give

up, get angry etc ex: Making me work late on Friday was the last straw.
19. precede: or to come before something else in a series → preceding ex: a type of

cloud that precedes rain


20. durable: staying in good condition for a long time, even if used a lot SYN: hard-

wearing ex: Wood is a durable material.


21. hefty: big and heavy / a hefty amount of something, especially money, is very

large ex: a hefty fine


22. generic: elating to a whole group of things rather than to one thing generic

term/name (for something) ex: Fine Arts is a generic term for subjects such as
painting, music, and sculpture
