Introducing the group’s topic:
Currently, the world faces many serious problems such as poverty, war, andpandemic diseases,
…. However, we can agree that environmental pollution isone of the most urgent threats
facing humanity. So, how to protect the environment? Let's find out with us!
Outlining the presentation:
There are three parts in our presentation. The first is General information. The second is Ways
to protect the enviroment. The third is Suggested sollutions.
1. General information
1.1. Concept
Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment by individuals,
groups, and governments. Its objectives are to conserve natural resources and the existing
natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends.
Due to the pressures of overconsumption, population growth and technology, the biophysical
environment is being degraded, sometimes permanently. This has been recognized, and
governments have begun placing restraints on activities that cause environmental degradation .
Since the 1960s, environmental movements have created more awareness of the multiple
environmental problems. There is disagreement on the extent of the environmental impact of
human activity, so protection measures are occasionally debated.
1.2. Classification
5
The environment is divided into 3 types including natural environment, artificial environment
and social environment.
Natural environment
o Soil environment: Includes soil, sand, gravel, and rocks.
o Air environment (atmospheric environment): The atmosphere on earth.
o Water environment (hydrosphere environment): includes salt water, fresh water,
and brackish water.
o Biological environment (biosphere environment): includes animals, plants and
humans,...
This is the environment that provides us with air to breathe, land to build houses, grow crops,
raise livestock, and provides humans with the mineral resources needed for production,
consumption, and storage. Assimilation of waste, entertainment...
Artificial environment
Includes all factors created by humans that make up the amenities of life such as: houses,
offices, urban areas, parks, airplanes, cars, etc....
The social environment
The social environment is the environment that orients human activities according to a certain
framework, includes the overall relationships between people such as institutions, laws,
agreements, commitments, regulations, etc., creating collective strength.
1.3. Current status
Nowadays, the environment is facing a number of serious problems, including:
Climate Change: Climate change is a serious global problem. The Earth's average
temperature is rising, the sea level is increasing, climate change and extreme weather
phenomena are affecting ecosystems around the world.
Air Pollution: The world's thin-dust air pollution is at alarming levels. Air pollution
continues to rise at an alarming rate and affects economies and the quality of human
life. Vietnam is among the top ten air-polluting countries in Asia. The concentration of
PM2.5 in Vietnam is 4.9 times higher than the guaranteed atmospheric level.
Water pollution: Water sources contaminated by toxic substances, industrial and
agricultural waste, and natural resource exploitation. Underground water is an abundant
source of water that is extensively exploited in rural areas. Specifically, well water,
they're having pollution problems. The canals, the lakes, all have been heavily polluted.
Biodiversity degradation: It can be said that the state of biodiversity in Vietnam is
influenced by the history of war and culture depending on natural resources. Besides,
the use of wild animals to serve the livelihoods of forest-based communities has put
many animal species at risk of extinction, as in the case of primates.
Depletion of natural resources: Our country is one of the countries with rich and diverse
natural resources in the world. However, resource degradation, depletion, threatens the
sustainable development of the country.
2.1. Reduce
6
Reduce: is to lessen waste by altering consumption and way of life, enhancing manufacturing
methods, etc. Out of the three measures, this one is the most successful; it optimizes
production and environmentally friendly consumption, producing the most things and utilizing
them most efficiently while using the fewest resources and producing the least amount of trash.
Reduce measures may be used in a variety of methods, some of which are straight
forward and simple to include into daily life, like:
o When shopping, use cloth bags rather than plastic ones.
o Seek methods to repurpose products rather than purchasing new ones.
o Select to purchase goods with minimal or no packaging.
o Make use of recycled or items manufactured from recycled resources.
o Reduce the amount of things you use that contain harmful substances.
Benefits of Reduce measures:
o Reduce actions contribute to less trash being generated, which lessens harmful
effects on the environment. When waste materials like plastic, metal, glass, etc.
are not properly disposed of, they contaminate the environment, harming both
human health and the health of other living things.
o Waste in production and consumption is the cause of the depletion of natural
resources like water, land, oil, and so on. By implementing Reduce measures, we
can safeguard the environment and use resources more wisely.
o Reducing trash also aids in lowering the price of waste treatment operations for
institutions and governments, which can have long-term positive economic
effects.
Difficulties in applying Reduce measures:
o Human consumption patterns: We are so accustomed to utilizing packaged goods
or ones that are used just once before being discarded. It takes a shift of
perspective for each individual to break this habit, which is not simple.
o Ignorance about the effects of trash on the environment: Many people are still
not aware of the negative impact of waste on the environment. They continue to
believe that single-use plastic bags and trash are commonplace and
unproblematic. As a result, raising public awareness and education is crucial to
encouraging the use of Recduce measures.
2.2. Reuse
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in 2012, Americans created 251
million tons of trash of which 87 million tons was composted or recycled (source). I believe
there’s more we can do; if we reused one-fourth of our trash, it would make a huge impact for
future generations. For those things that must be thrown away, I suggest using biodegradable
trash bags, which degrade much faster than conventional plastic trash bags. This leads me to
the first item on the list:
2.2.1. Plastic Bags
Let’s keep plastic bags out of landfills by reusing them in these ways:
Future shopping trips can become less wasteful by reusing plastic bags. Store them in
your trunk or door cubby – just remember to grab them before entering the store!
Create packing materials from plastic bags to protect breakables when moving or layer
plastic bags between valuables when storing. You can also use them to provide extra
padding when mailing packages.
7
Plants alive when you leave town by placing plastic bags around the entire plant to trap
moisture.
Protect wipers and mirrors by putting plastic bags over them during freezing weather.
Ditch plastic for cloth by using reusable canvas bags for your shopping.
Recycle plastic bags at any big box store by putting your used bags in the designated
boxes usually near or around the entrance/exit
Donate used plastic bags (without rips or tears) to local businesses who need bags like
thrift stores, libraries, or animal shelters
2.2.2. Food Scraps
In the United States, around 30 percent of food goes to waste. Here are a few ideas to reuse
food scraps instead of tossing them in the trash:
Garlic skins or onion skins added to soups will add extra vitamins and minerals, just be
sure to remove them before serving.
Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, which is great for seedlings and plants (especially
roses). They can be used as pest control to help keep ants and slugs away. Also, placing
coffee grounds in your refrigerator or freezer will help neutralize any odors.
Egg shells are high in calcium so sprinkling them on the soil below plants will boost
growth – or – grind them up into powder then add them to smoothies and shakes.
Avocado seeds are rich in fiber and antioxidants. They can be dried, cut into pieces, and
ground into a fine powder then added to smoothies or shakes.
Meat bones are great for making homemade broth by saving bones from roasting or
slow cooking, store in the freezer until there is enough to make broth.
Orange and lemon peels can be frozen or dried for later use. Just create twists then place
in the freezer or in a spot to dry (at least 1 week). Combining citrus peels with water
and vinegar makes for a nice homemade multi-purpose cleaner.
Compost is the next best thing if you don’t have the time to reuse your food scraps.
2.2.3. Worn or Stained Clothing
Instead of tossing clothes into the trash, look at these ways to upcycle all kinds of fabric:
Cutting fabric into rags is the easiest solution – simply cut into small and large squares
for indoor and outdoor cleaning rags.
Upcycle old jeans into bags, stuffed animals for kids or pets, or even cut them into small
patches for other jeans.
Donate any clothing in good shape to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or consignment
shops. Local shelters may also take donations.
2.2.4. Glass Jars
In America, more than 11.6 million tons of glass is trashed each year and only 28 percent is
recovered for recycling. Here are a few ideas to reuse glass:
Get organized by using jars for spices and dry goods in the pantry or to help organize
tools like nuts and bolts.
Drink water from used mason jars – an EcoJarz lid will turn it into a portable drinking
container.
Make an outdoor windproof candle by adding a beeswax votive to a heat resistant glass
jar, be sure to leave the lid off and don’t burn yourself.
8
Recycle if you can’t find a use for your empty glass containers.
2.2.5. Styrofoam
Americans throw away 25 billion styrofoam cups each year. 500 years from now these cups
will still be sitting in a landfill. If you have styrofoam, reuse it in these ways:
Create stencils for painting by drawing your favorite shapes on the styrofoam and then
cutting those shapes out.
Make packing peanuts if you have a lot of styrofoam – just cut it up into smaller pieces
and use it as packing materials.
Add drainage for plants with styrofoam peanuts or by cutting up large pieces of
styrofoam. Just add them to the bottom of the pot instead of rocks, fill with dirt and add
a plant.
Stop using styrofoam by not purchasing food or drinks in these containers. Instead buy
these for take out and these for coffee to-go.
2.2.6. Used Tea Bags
After water, tea is the second-most-consumed beverage in the world. Here are some ways to
reuse tea bags:
Relieve puffy eyes by chilling the bags in the refrigerator then placing one over each
eye.
Soothe insect bites and minor burns by chilling the bags in the refrigerator then placing
them on bites or burns.
Take a calming bath by adding used tea bags to bath water for some free aromatherapy
and skin smoothing effects.
Feed your garden with the acidic tannins of caffeinated tea and rejuvenate plants
(especially roses and ferns) by breaking open used tea bags and sprinkling the contents
over the soil below the plant.
Compost if you can’t find a way to reuse your tea bags to help enrich the soil.
2.3. Recycle
2.3.1. Notion
Recycle is to transform or convert materials/waste into reusable items. It subjects objects
through a process or treatment that permits them to be used again, usually for a different
purpose.
2.3.2. Characteristic
It should be distinguished from reuse. Recycling is the breaking-down of second-hand, old-
items to create raw materials for the construction of new products.
Recycling is a process:
• Collection & Segregation
• Processing and remanufacturing
• Purchase & Use It is not Recycling if no one buys or makes use the end (recycled)
product.
Ex: Recycling of paper, cardboard, metals, glass, plastic, aluminum, organic waste and
hazardous mater,...
2.3.3. Benefits of the Recycle Rule
9
Reduce the amount of waste: When we recycle, we keep for economical use of
materials and reduce the amount of waste created.
Saving resources: The recycling process helps save materials from natural sources,
while reducing the search and exploitation of new resources.
Creates quieter conditions for the environment: The production process of new products
from recycled materials has less impact on the environment compared to the production
process from new resources.
Reduced energy consumption: New production processes from recycled materials often
require less energy than production from new resources.
3.1. Recommendation to the Government
Governments play a vital role in environmental protection through policy-making, regulation,
and enforcement. The following are some suggested solutions for the government.
First of all, the government must impose stricter environmental regulations and standards. This
includes limiting industrial emissions, enforcing stricter waste disposal and management
regulations, and penalizing environmental violations. By establishing and enforcing these
regulations, the government can hold businesses and individuals accountable for their
environmental impact.
Secondly, the government should encourage sustainable activities through incentives and tax
breaks. This can be accomplished by providing tax breaks for businesses that use
environmentally friendly practices, such as renewable energy sources or energy-efficient
technologies.
Thirdly, the government should invest in renewable energy sources and encourage their use.
Renewable energy can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect the environment, and
prevent climate change.
Last but not least, the government must work with other countries to address global
environmental issues. By sharing knowledge, technology, and resources, governments can
collectively tackle global environmental challenges.
3.2. Contact yourself
To protect the environment, as a student we need :
Actively participate in environmental protection volunteer movements and activities at
schools, dormitories, localities …
Propaganda to mobilize everyone to protect the green – clean – beautiful environment
Condemn, denounce and oppose violations of the law on environmental protection and
natural resources
Cleaning classrooms, campuses
Do not litter indiscriminately, throw garbage in the right place: Because one of the main
causes of environmental pollution stems from littering. If students' environmental
awareness is enhanced, it will improve the problem.
Limit the use of plastic bags, plastic items
Save electricity and water to protect the green earth
Planting trees for forests in schools, localities
There are many ways that students can join hands to protect the environment and every action
to protect the environment is equally valuable from small actions such as just throwing garbage
in the right place of an individual to large programs and movements. Because the ultimate goal
in environmental protection activities is to raise environmental protection awareness from
10
everyone so that everyone is conscious of working together to preserve and protect the
environment.Be 1 example for everyone to look at and follow.
Conclusion
In conclusion, maintaining the environment is a vital duty that we are
allobligated to carry out. There are several strategies for accomplishing this,
including waste reduction, energy conservation, the use of environmentally friendly
products, and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles. By cutting backon waste, we can lessen
the quantity of rubbish that ends up in landfills and the ocean. This can be accomplished
through recycling, composting, and whenpractical, repurposing objects. Another crucial
aspect of environmental protection is energy conservation. It is possible to achieve this by
using energy-efficient appliances, shutting off lights when not in use, and turning
torenewable energy sources like solar or wind power. Additionally, using
environmentally friendly items helps to avoid the usage of dangerous chemicals and prevent
pollution. By taking these steps and incorporating them into ourdaily lives, we can
significantly impact our planet's health and well-being. Together, we can ensure that
future generations have access to clean air, water, and natural resources.
We’ve finished our presentation. Do you have any questions about our topic? All
