What are Vital Signs?

Measurements, specifically
pulse rate, temperature,
respiration rate, and blood
pressure, that indicate the state
of a patient's essential body
functions.
Medical Detectives Pulse 4

Pulse
A pulse is a measurement of a heartbeat as it pumps blood.
Medical Detectives Respiratory Rates 5

Respiratory Rates
The measure of how many
breaths a person takes in a
measured amount of time.
Medical Detectives- Disease Blood Pressure 6
Detectives

Blood Pressure
The pressure of blood in the circulatory
system.

Independent, Dependent, and Controlled Variables

Independent: Is the changed variable by the person thatʼs making the experiment
Dependent: The response that comes when you change the independent
Controlled: Something/Someone used for a comparison for checking the results.

Finding Patientsʼ Test Results

To find a patientʼs test results, you must do the following steps in order:
Review Case Notes: Examine the patient's medical file, physician notes, and any documented symptoms or history.

Conduct a Neurological Exam: Assess the patient's nervous system to identify any abnormalities or issues.

Analyze Test Results: Look at the results from various medical tests (e.g., blood tests, imaging studies) to gather important information
about the patient's health.

Formulate a Diagnosis: Based on the collected information, propose a preliminary diagnosis.

Diagnostic Imaging: Review any imaging results (e.g., X-rays, MRIs) to further support your diagnosis.

Document Findings: Record your observations, test results, and diagnosis in a systematic manner.

Create Educational Materials: Develop materials to educate the patient or others about the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Reflect on the Process: Evaluate the steps taken and the conclusions drawn to improve future investigations
Medical Detectives- Disease Pathogens 13
Detectives

Pathogens

A microorganism that
causes disease in a host
organism

For example, letʼs say we have a human named Bob

Bobʼs pulse rate (number of
heartbeats in an amount of time) is
Pulse: 67
at 67, his respiration rate (number of
Breaths: 75
breaths in an amount of time) is at
BP: 50
75, his blood pressure is at 50, and
Temp: 15*F
his temperature is at 15 degrees
Fahrenheit.
IV: Vital Signs
DV: Bobʼs Stat.
The IV (independent variable) is the
CV: Bob
vital signs, the DV (dependent
variable) is Bobʼs status, and the CV
(controlled variable) is Bob.
