STEPS FOR ANALYSIS AND MODELLING IN ETABS

1 Draw centre line in framing plan & make .dxf file of centre line plan only
Purge all other layers except dxf.
Move bottom left corner to 0,0,0coordinate
Ensure that the dxf unit is in Meter with 3 decimal

2 Import .dxf file in ETAB to creat grid lines

File Import DXF file of Architectural grid
choose Default.edb select layer for grids(layer of centre line in DXF file) select unit (metric system) (kn.M) OK

3 Keep storey 1 & delete remaining all.

Edit Edit storey data delete storey

4 Define material properties if required other than default.edb file

Define Material properties (e.g. M30-- fck--Ec---fy)-- Isotropic

5 Define column & beam section

Define Frame section
5.1 For column section (b X d)
select Add Rectangular from scroll bar give Section name --e.g C230x500-- select material which is already defined in Material property
give dimensions depth & width select Reinforcement
design type--column
confugaration of reinforcement--Rectangular / Circlular
define concrete cover (effective cover)
Note : The procedure will be same for circular (Add Circular)

5.2 For beam section (b X d)

select Add Rectangular from scroll bar give Section name --e.g B230x500-- select material which is already defined in Material property
give dimensions depth & width select Reinforcement
design type--beam
define concrete cover (effective cover)

6 Define wall & slab section

Define Wall/slab/deck section
6.1 For wall section
select Add New wall from scroll bar give Section name --e.g W230-- select material which is all ready defined in Material property
Give thk. (for membrane & bending give equall thk.)
Select Shell type

6.2 For slab section

select Add New slab from scroll bar give Section name --e.g S200 --select material which is all ready defined in Material property
Give thk. (for membrane & bending give equall thk.)
Select Membrane type

7 To start model, first place column section in respected positions on grid line intersections (give correct Angle)
Draw Draw line objects Create columns in Region (select section & column angle in plan)

8 Draw wall on grid lines

Draw Draw Area objects Draw Walls (Plan) (select wall section)
In lower most storey meshing should be done for all shear walls
select perticular wall Edit Mesh area

9 Assign pier labels to walls

Assign shell/area Pier label

10 Model beams after placing columns in position.

use grid lines & column points for modeling the beams
Draw Draw line objects Draw lines ( select beam section)
Assign Frame/Line Frame releases (if requirerd)
11 Model slabs in plan
Go to the " Set building view options "
OFF grid lines & only ON column, beam, point objects & point lables to set object present in view
draw slab in plan from point to point of columns & beams
Draw Draw Area objects Draw Areas (select section for slab)
Check slab connectivity with "reshape object"
Draw Reshape Object select all slab panels on floor plan and check.

12 Assign supports at the base level

Assign joint /point Restraints(supports) ok

13 If single floor model is completed then take model check

Analyse Check Model select all tabs OK
if model is correct then "Model has been checked, No warning messages" msg will prompt.
if model is not correct then some warnings will be displayed in msg box. In this case delete respected members
which are creating warning in model & redraw these members again. Check model again.
Redraw member or model till no warnings will be appeared

13 a Select all slabs by using "Set building view options"

Assign Shell/Area loads Uniform
Select load case name live (2 kn/m2)

14 Run Analysis and check Last Run Analysis Log

Check the number of warnings for single storey
Pick that joint coordiantes and check the joint connectivity
Try to remove those warnings in single storeyitself (Because those warnings willl be multiplied in number. of stories)

14 a Check the LIVE LOAD intensity

"display" show table reaction
Select the complete table and copy that table
Open new excel sheet and paste that table.
Sum all the reacion and divide by area

15 Add floors
Edit Edit story data Insert story
Give story ID-- e.g. floor 1/podium/parking/terrace
Give story height
Insert story location---Above which story, new story will be placed
Select replicate new story--- select from which story, new story will replicate (make changes in plan after replicate if any)

16 Define Diaphragms
Select all Floor by keeping only floors in "Set building view options"
Assign Shell/Area Diaphragms (D1)

17 Edit story data

Edit Edit story data Edit story
Give story name, height, master story, similar to story
It will help in giving loads / property in one story or all stories or similar stories.
18 Loads/load combinations

18.1 Static load cases

Define Static load cases
Dead -Self weight
SDL - Superimposed dead load
Live - Live load
EQX - Earthquake in x direction
EQY - Earthquake in y direction
WLX - Wind load in x direction
WLY- Wind load in y direction
keep self weight multiplier 1 in Dead load case & 0 in other load cases
Use user defined function for wind load
Use diaphragms for wind load case, which is defined earlier

18.2 line load or beam load

First select beams on which load needs to be given
Assign Frame/line loads point or distributed
Select load case name SDL / live
Select direction
Apply load trapezoidal / uniform load

18.3 Area loads or slab load

First select slab on which load need to be given
Assign Shell/Area loads Uniform
Select load load case name SDL / live
Select direction

18.4 Define Response spectrum functions and cases

Define Response spectrum Functions (as per 1893 -2002 code)
Define Response spectrum cases Add new spectrum (spec1 & spec2 with scale 1 for U1 & U2 respectively)

18.6 Mass source

Define Mass source
Select "From loads" & define mass multipliers of dead load,SDL & live load

19a Analysis
Analyze Run Analysis

19b Calculate scaling factor for earthquake in X and Y.

Btm. storey shear for Eqx
e.g Scaling factor = -------------------------------------------
Btm. storey shear for Spec1

Change the scaling factor for spec1 and spec2 and reanalize.

20a Check Run log errors

File Last Run Analysis log
% Errors should be less than 0.001

20b Check analysis results.

-- Maximum absolute point deflections in X,Y and Z.
-- First mode time period value
-- Percentage of mass participation.

21 Design
Design concrete frame design select design combo
Start Design/check of structure

Design shear wall design select design combo

Start Design/check of structure

22 Check % of reinforcement
Design concrete frame design Display design info

check % of steel in columns ( failed members will be displayed in RED)

23 Change properties of failed members

Select member Assign Frame line (for frame members)
