Technologies that can change the entire world and not just the industry it’s rooted in come in

Foreword waves.

In the early 80’s, it was the PC revolution that brought enterprise level computing into the hands of
consumers. In the mid-90s it was the internet and, in particular, the World Wide Web, making ease
of data accessibility on a global scale a reality. In the mid-2000s, the ability of smartphones and
wireless networks to take that data and the associated services, and make it ubiquitous no matter
where you are, made information mobility a reality.

Now, in the early 2020s. We are seeing the rise of a technology that may eclipse all of the above. The
impact of AI and, in particular, Generative AI (GenAI) cannot be underestimated. The uses of it in
creative fields, computing research and development, life sciences and healthcare, manufacturing,
financial analysis and more are a glimpse into the potential impact that this technology can have
on the human condition. Because of the breadth of usage across all industries and personal use,
GenAI has the potential to be the largest societal transforming technology up to this point in the
current decade.

Most organizations have just started adopting some AI practices and MLOps, with the introduction
of GenAI with its rapid fast pace evolution they are now required to upgrade those skills and
understand how these new LLMOps environments should be designed and to what value as well as
what is the best ROI on those GenAI investments.

WEKA, in conjunction with the AI Accelerator Institute, has sponsored this report to help answer some
of these key questions around GenAI. This report also compares results to last year’s report, so we
can see the rapid changes that have happened over the past year, and provide a directional lens
into the Who/What/How of GenAI usage and where it’s heading. With that, we invite you to read on
and glean insights to help you understand how GenAI is being used today, and where it might head
tomorrow.

Following closely in second, Europe represents 33.6% of respondents, likely supported by its
strong academic presence in AI, favorable government policies, and funding mechanisms.

Asia saw a decrease in engagement with generative AI, dropping to 12.1% from last year’s
value of 24.1%, which can be attributed to software development needs, for example.

Unlike last year, we’ve seen representation from Central America at 2.9%; although having
a low adoption rate, it’s great to see generative AI growing in other regions. 8

on leveraging AI for strategic decision-making and innovation.

Marketing saw a slight 3.7% increase from last year, at 16.4%, pointing to marketing
departments utilizing AI for data-driven decision-making, customer segmentation, and

500 employees (32.7%), which starkly contrasts last year’s results, in which companies
with 1-10 employees represented the plurality of respondents at 30.6%.

It’s interesting to note the switch in places of companies with 1-10 and more than 500
employees. This could mean that larger companies see more value in using AI to
streamline their operations.

Having a somewhat even spread of employee numbers per company gives us insights
into what companies of all sizes prioritize when using generative AI tools. 12

When it comes to company revenue, the majority of respondents (55.7%) were located in
the band with less than $50 million, which is the same as last year (61.9%).

This could be due to smaller companies heavily leveraging AI technologies to gain

competitive advantages, enhance efficiencies, and offset limited resources. Smaller
businesses might also find AI tools beneficial for scaling operations and automating tasks.

The next most common band continues to be companies with a revenue of over $500
million (22.1%), as they likely have the resources to invest in more sophisticated AI
solutions that can be integrated across various departments

However, it’s great to see a diverse representation of company revenue, pointing to the
usefulness of generative AI beyond a potential cost-saving feature. 13

Early post-product market fit 16.9%

Mid-growth with an established go-to-market team 23.1%

Late growth/scale-up 10.8%

There’s been a substantial increase from 23.4% to 30% of companies at an enterprise level
compared to last year. This could reflect ongoing investments in AI to drive innovation and
enhance operational efficiencies on a large scale.

Adoption decreased from 25.3% last year to 19.2% this year in companies in the early pre-
product market fit level. This decline might suggest a decrease in the initial enthusiasm for
AI integration as businesses evaluate the tangible benefits of these tools.

Similarly, the number of companies in the late growth/scale-up level has decreased
from 17.8% last year to 10.8% this year. This represents a significant shift, which could
mean companies are temporarily reducing their focus on new AI initiatives to streamline
operations and maximize efficiency with existing technologies. 14

for practitioners (48.4%) and end users (56.4%), the latter of which
placed more importance on this factor.

There’s been a decrease in the use of generative AI for conversational

applications, although practitioners place higher importance on their use—
perhaps to streamline communication with customers through chatbots.

We’ve also seen a slight increase in the importance of data augmentation,

How do you primarily integrate generative AI tools into

your workflow?

This year, we asked respondents how they primarily integrate generative AI

tools into their workflow.

Both practitioners (47.5%) and end users (43.6%) placed more emphasis
on integrating generative AI into daily tasks across various functions. This
common ground can be due to both seeing generative AI tools as effective
in enhancing general productivity and efficiency across different job
functions.

Practitioners report a higher tendency (30.5%) to use generative AI for

specific projects or tasks compared to end users (20.5%). The nature of
practitioners’ work could be behind this difference, as it likely involves more
specialized, project-based applications.

Both practitioners and end users also engage with generative AI tools
sporadically as needs arise, with end users (30.8%) slightly more likely to
do so than practitioners (22%). This difference could be because end users’
interaction with AI is more flexible and driven by immediate needs rather
than embedded into ongoing projects.

Conclusion of the evolving landscape and offer a deeper understanding of how this
technology is being integrated and perceived across various industries.

So, what does the Generative AI 2024 report tell us about the industry?

Compared to last year, the adoption of generative AI has significantly increased,

with a notable rise in the use of these tools to speed up work and enhance
productivity.

Practitioners and end users alike are finding generative AI essential for text
applications and specific project tasks, highlighting its growing importance in
daily operations. This year’s findings also indicate a significant shift towards
prioritizing quality over efficiency, demonstrating a shift in how these tools are
perceived and utilized.

Our next report will investigate how these trends develop further, particularly
focusing on whether the challenges identified this year, such as integration issues
and the need for more accurate models, are being addressed.

One important point from this year’s report is that, although generative AI is
advancing quickly, it’s crucial to regularly audit, enhance security measures, and
increase transparency in data usage to sustain its growth and ensure its ethical
deployment.

In conclusion, this year’s report highlights the vital role of continued education,
improved tool integration, and a focus on addressing ethical and privacy
concerns in shaping the future of generative AI.
