Introduction
Social media use has become prevalent and nearly inevitable, changing the way
students interact, connect, and socialize; it has become an integral part of their social
and cultural fabric. As a result, students spend a significant amount of time on social
media. Thus, this study investigates the impact of social media usage on students'
academic performance amidst the new normal of education, specifically during the
COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the statistical finding, the respondents' perception of
their social media usage significantly affects their academic performance (p=.000) with
an associated probability value of 0.05 alpha level of significance.
Theoretical framework
The theoretical framework for exploring the effects of social media to the study
habits among grade 11 students of DCCP that encompasses various psychological and
educational theories. These includes the Uses and Gratification Theory by Elihu Katz,
and Mediational theory by Vygotsky’s.
Uses and Gratification Theory, this identifies the needs and motives behind
online media usage. According to Olise & Makka, (2013) the theory was developed by
Elihu Katz in the early 1970’s. Uses and Gratification theory suggests that social media
users have power over their media consumption and assume an active role in
interpreting and integrating media into their own lives and that they Are responsible for
choosing media to meet their desires and needs to achieve gratification (Olise). Uses
and gratification of the social media approach focuses on why and how people use
social media to satisfy their needs (Larose, Mastro & Eastin, 2001).
With the use of Uses and Gratification Theory, we can investigate the many
motivations behind Grade 11 DCCP students’ use of social media. This can involve
looking for entertainment, leisure, social interaction, information, etc. We can learn more
about the relationships between various social media usage patterns and academic
achievement by identifying these motivations. This theory also highlights how people
choose media content on purpose to satisfy their needs and wants. We can determine
how students’ use of social media affects their academic engagement and performance
by looking at the satisfactions they seek from it, such as social contact, keeping up with
news and events, or stress relief.
This study aimed to provide valuable information on the effects of social media
to the study habits of Grade 11 students in Data Center College of the
Philippines(DCCP).
For the Students, this study offers students the opportunity to reflect on their
social media usage habits and their impact on academic performance. By gaining
awareness of how social media affects their study habits, students can make informed
decisions to optimize their study time and productivity.
For the Teachers, Educators play a vital role in guiding students toward effective
study habits. By understanding the relationship between social media usage and study
behaviors, teachers can develop strategies to support students in managing their online
activities responsibly. This may include incorporating digital learning education into the
curriculum or providing guidance on balancing social media use with academic
responsibilities.
Parents can benefit from this study by gaining insight into the role of social media
in their children's study habits. Understanding how social media usage may impact
academic performance, parents can engage in constructive conversations with their
children about responsible online behavior and setting healthy boundaries for screen
time.
For the Researchers, the results of this study may be a basis of further studies,
and it can be used as a related literature.
CHAPTER II
Study Design
The study aims to investigate the influence of social media usage on the study habits
of Grade 11 students at Data Center College of the Philippines Annex building. Drawing
upon existing literature and theories, the research seeks to address gaps in
understanding how social media impacts study habits and academic performance.
Utilizing a correlational research design, the study will involve collecting data through
surveys/questionnaires to assess social media usage patterns and study habits among
the targeted student population, Additionally, interviews or focus groups may provide
deeper insights into the relationship between social media engagement and academic
behaviors, By analyzing the data using appropriate statistical methods.
The research focuses on investigating the impact of social media platforms on the
study habits of Grade 11 students at Data Center College of the Philippines Annex
building. The population of interest includes Grade 11 at the Data Center College of the
Philippines Annex building. Students actively engaged with various social media
platforms. Through a combination of random and purposive sampling methods,
participants will be selected based on their enrollment status, consent, and regular
usage of social media.
In conducting the study, the researchers will employ survey questionnaires for
gathering data. The researchers will create questionnaires which will serve as the data
gathering tools. This allows us to get a range of information regarding participants’
views on how social media platforms affect their study habits.
To delve into the effects of social media platforms on study habits among approximately
40 students of Data Center College of the Philippines, the data gathering procedure
entails a multifaceted approach. Surveys will be distributed to gather quantitative data,
probing respondents about their social media usage patterns, study habits, and
academic performance.
The respondent’s approval or disapproval is indicated in the consent form. Those who
agreed to participate are then given the questionnaire, and we provide them instructions
on how to complete it
The researchers would then filter out and tally the gathered information to help and
achieve the objectives of the study. The process revolves by removing irrelevant
information, such as insight to benefit the researchers. And so, by doing the procedure
then the researchers can draw much more meaningful results and recommendations for
the study.
Treatment of Data
So if we manage to collect the data that were collected, the researchers will assemble,
sort, arrange, and tabulate the information. They were exposed to statistical therapy in
order to respond to the study's suggested questions. The weighted mean, ordinal scale,
frequency distribution, and percentage were the statistical instruments used.
Ethical considerations
If we will try to conduct the survey on the effects of social media in the study habits
of grade 11 data center students, the researcher’s outmost priority is the well-being and
comfort of our participants. We will ensure that all students invited to participate receive
clear and understandable information about the study’s purpose, potential risks, and
benefits right from the start. Participants will be asked for their consent before engaging
in the survey, and they will be assured of their right to withdraw at any a point without
facing any consequences. To protect their privacy, all responses collected during the
survey will be kept strictly confidential and anonymized during analysis. Our
questionnaire will be designed with simplicity and clarity in mind, ensuring that
questions are easy to understand and answer for our participants. Additionally, the
researchers would ensure respect for intellectual property rights by giving a proper
citations and acknowledgement to the rightful owner when using findings and
information to an existing literature.
