Hydrostatic Forces on Plane Surface

Hydrostatic Forces- relate to the weight of

ℎ =
fluid bearing on the surface = 푐

Figure shows a plane panel of arbitrary

shape completely submerged in a liquid.
The panel plane makes an arbitrary angle
with the horizontal free surface, so that the
depth varies over the panel surface
• A liquid creates a pressure loading that
acts perpendicular to a submerged

surface. Since the liquid is assumed to be
incompressible, then the pressure
intensity increases linearly with depth
푐 = ℎ푐

surface is F = 푐 (A)
• Then the total force acting on the
• Center of Gravity (cg)- the geometric
center of the area of the submerged
plane with h distance from the surface ℎ = = 푐
• Center of Pressure (cp)- the location of
the resultant force acting to the 푐
submerged plane

of pressure below the center of gravity

Recall
PROBLEM 22-24

Gate AB is 5 ft wide into the paper, hinged

at A, and restrained by a stop at B. Compute:

(22) the force on stop B aif h = 9.5ft

(23) the reactions at A if the water depth h = 9.5 ft.
(24) If the max force at B is limited to 9200lbf, at
what max height h will be?
PROBLEM 25-27
The gate is 5 ft wide, is hinged at point B, and
rests against a smooth wall at point A.
Compute:

(25) the force on the gate due to seawater

pressure,
(26) the horizontal force P exerted by the wall at
point A
(27) the reactions at the hinge B.
PROBLEM 28-30
• A circular plate of diameter 1.0m is vertically submerged in
water

28. Compute for the depth of center of pressure if the plate is

submerged such that its top edge is on the liquid surface
29. Compute for the depth of center of pressure if the plate is
submerged such that its top edge is 2m below the liquid surface
30. Compute for the total force acting at cg from problem (29)
Problem 31-33
A pressurized tank contains oil and has a
square, 0.6-m by 0.6-m plate bolted to its side,
as is illustrated. The pressure gage on the top
of the tank reads 50 kPa, and the outside of
the tank is at atmospheric pressure.

31. What is the force acting on the plate in kN

due to the gage pressure
32. What is the resultant force acting on the
plate?
33. What is the depth of the resultant force
acting on the plate?
Hydrostatic Forces on Curved Surface
• same concept is used from plane surfaces but curved surfaces
bear weight of fluid acting vertically.
Problem 34-35
A 6-ft-diameter drainage conduit of the
type shown is half full of water at rest
34. Determine the resultant force acting
on plane BC
35. Determine the angle of resultant with
respect to horizontal

Problem 36-37
A sea wall of is in a form of a semi
parabola. Use unit weight of sea water at
1050 kg/cu.m

36. What is the resultant force acting on A

curved surface

37. Determine the location of the action

of the resultant from point A
