Material balances on system with recycle and purge

N2 + 3H2 --> 2NH3

Because of CH4 impurity in the N2 feed, a purge is needed (stream 6) to obtain

steady-state operation.

The H2/N2 ratio in the feed is 3:1 (stoichiometric) The separator is assumed perfect;
it removes all the NH3 but no H2, N2, or CH4.

The fee is 74.775 mol/s of H2, 24.925 mol/s of N2, and 1.2 mol/s of CH4.

Solution The flow rates that are zero (N2, H2, CH4 flows at point 4; NH3 flow at
points 2, 5, 6, and 7) were set to zero in the table of Stream flow rates.

17 equations and 17 unknowns

The overall material balances (Cells H29-H31) were not used in the solution
because these equations are redundant.

Excel was used to obtain the solution by inserting guess values for the unknow flow
rates (orange cells) and varying their values to minimize the calculated values in the
yellow cells

The material balance equations were arranged so all terms are on one side of the
equation and tries to make that equation equal to zero.

A well-insulated, 65-m storage tank contains 220 L of liquid water at 75ºC. The
rest of the tank contains steam in equilibrium with the water. Spent process
steam at 2.3 bar and 91% quality enters the tank until the pressure in the tank
reaches 2.3 bar. Assume no heat losses. How much steam enters the tank, and
what is the amount of liquid water present at the end of the process?
