Enlist the Activities During Removal of Form
Work And Precaution to Be Taken
Form Work -

Mold used to form concrete into structural shapes

(beams, columns, slabs, shells) for building is called as
form work.

Formwork can be of timber, steel, plastic, or fiberglass.

The inside surface is coated with a bond breaker (plastic

or oil) to keep the concrete from sticking to the mold.

Purpose -

1. To provide the mould to the concrete.

2. To provide smooth finish to the concrete work.

Activities during Removal of Form Work -

1. Inspection

2. Notify stakeholders

3. Release vertical formwork

4. Release the horizontal formwork

5. Support system

6. Formwork fasteners

7. Striking formwork

8. Inspection of concrete surface

Inspection -

Before removal, inspect the concrete structure to

ensure it has achieved sufficient strength and durability
for the removal of formwork.

Follow the recommended curing time specified in the

construction plan or as per design specification

Description of structural member Removal time in day’s

Soffit formwork to slabs 3

Beams soffits – the props left underside 7

Prop removal for slabs up to 4.5 m 7
Prop removal for slabs > 4.5 m 14
Up to 6 m beams and arches 14
Greater than 6 m span beams and arches 21
Walls, columns, beam vertical side 16-24 Hr.
Notify stakeholders -

Inform all relevant parties, including site personnel and

supervisors, of the scheduled formwork removal to
ensure safety and coordination.

Release vertical formwork -

Start by removing the vertical formwork such as wall

forms. Remove vertical forms gradually, typically from
top to bottom, and ensure that personnel working below
are adequately protected.

Release the horizontal formwork

After removing the vertical forms, proceed to remove

horizontal formwork such as slab forms or beam forms.
This should also be done gradually and in a sequence that
maintains structural stability.
Support system -

In some cases, temporary supports may be needed to

maintain structural integrity during the formwork removal
process. These supports should be installed as necessary
and removed with caution.

Formwork fasteners -

Remove formwork fasteners, such as bolts, pins, or

wedges, in a systematic manner to avoid sudden
structural shifts. Use appropriate tools for this purpose.

Striking formwork -

Use special care when striking or knocking the

formwork to release it from the concrete. Avoid
excessive force that could damage the concrete surface.
Inspection of concrete -

Inspect the concrete surface for any defects, such as

honeycombing or surface irregularities, which may need
repair before the formwork removal is complete.
Precaution to Be Taken -

1. Always start removing the formwork when the element

has reached the formwork removal time, which is
determined by the test results performed in the laboratory.
For normal small and ordinary structures when tests are
not possible, follow instructions in drawings or
instructions of the structural engineer.

2. The compressive strength is followed as per IS method.

The test is carried out in standard cubes and/or cylinder of
same sample mix.

3. The developed strength of concrete can be determined at

the site by means of non-destructive tests (NDT) before
the removal of formwork.

4. The formwork props for soffits are not removed until it

is ensured that it can take its own weight and the stresses
acting externally.

5. The quality engineers have to inspect the site before

starting the formwork removal process.

6. The workers must have a safe access before removing

the formwork.
7. Special considerations must be given to freeze-thaw
damages and crack formation in concrete due to any sort of
thermal contractions while formwork removal. If this risk
exists, the formwork removal time can be delayed. The
removal of formwork at correct timing can be carried out if
we had planned and insulated the structure so that they are
not subjected to such damages. This is mainly encountered
in cold weather concreting.

8. The striking time of a structure is determined by the

strength gained or through non-destructive testing.

9. The formwork parts and related units have to be

arranged such a way that the removal is made easy. This
will help in reducing the damage to the concrete.

10. Only careful removal of the formwork panels will help

them to be reused.

11. The procedure of formwork removal has to be

properly supervised by an engineer. Good quality concrete
will be free from honeycombs and cracks. If any defects
exist, immediate repair works can be carried out.
12. The removal of formwork has to be done
sequentially and in a pattern with the approval of the site
in-charge.

13. Wooden wedges must be used to separate the forms

and not the crowbars.

14. Until the final removal of all the shoring units, the
beam and joist bottoms should remain as such.

15. Removal of formwork must not result in damage to

concrete surfaces, mainly corners and edges. Once the
removal process is complete, the exposed surfaces must be
covered with polythene bags or wet bags so that the
concrete is fully cured.

16. Sometimes for increasing the speed of construction, the

slabs is cast one above other keeping the formwork of one
more slab below. i.e. In such cases, the slab whose props
are removed has not only to support its self-load but also
has to support the load due to one slab above which has yet
not hardened and attained its full strength. In such cases
always follow instructions of the structural engineer.
