and a picture of the vessel MV

Teacher: Class kindly study this picture. What is this picture about?
Where is this found/located? Who are in the picture/sculpture?
(Answer: It’s the picture of the Pieta Park. It is found in
Catbalogan, particularly across the St. Bartholomew Church. In
it are the Virgin Mother Mary and her Son Jesus Christ.)
Teacher: Right. The picture shows the statue or sculpture of the
Pieta with the Virgin Mother Mary cradling the dead body of her
Son Jesus Christ after the crucifixion.

Why do we have such image in the park? Can you name an
event in the history of Catbalogan City that can be connected
to the Pieta? (Answers may vary)

the story? What happened to the MV Doña Paz?

D. Developmental Activities:
Teacher: This morning we are going to read the story of the MV Doña
Paz tragedy. But before we read the selection, I would like to
remind you of the Standards for Listening so that you can join
with our discussion later.
a. Standards for Listening (Teachers are advised to secure the
Standards for Listening and discuss it with the class. She/He may
call a pupil/s to read each standard.)
Teacher: Before we read the selection, I would like you to take note
of the motive question.
b. Motive Question:
- Why was the selection entitled “MV Doña Paz Tragedy”?
Teacher: Listen well as I read the short selection for you to be able to
answer the questions later.
c. Reading of (or Listening to) the selection:
(The class may read the selection ORALLY because beginning
readers as they are, it is a must for them to read texts orally as it
will help in their comprehension.)

MV DOÑA PAZ TRAGEDY

On December 20, 1987 at 6:30 in the evening, the ship MV (Maritime


Vessel) Doña Paz left Tacloban, Leyte, stopped over at Catbalogan, Samar and
finally sailed for Manila where it was expected to arrive at 4:00 in the afternoon of
the next day.

At around 10:30 in the evening of the same day, the ferry or MV Doña Paz
was at Dumali Point, along the Tablas Strait, near Marinduque. At about the same
time, MT (Maritime Tanker) Vector, an oil tanker carrying 1,041 metric tons of
gasoline and other petroleum products was also within the area as it was from
Bataan going to Masbate. The sea that night was clear but choppy.

While most of the passengers slept, MV Doña Paz collided with MT Vector.

among them. They jumped off the ship and swam among charred bodies in the

a. Sequencing Events. Direction: Read and understand the
sentences well. Sequence the events in the story using the appropriate
signal words before the sentences. Write the correct answer on the line
by choosing the correct answer from the parentheses. (first, second,

more than one event;
 We use Then when we think of what happened
following an event;
 We use Last to mark the final or last event.

b. Retelling the story. Direction: Retell some events in the story


using the pictures.

Teacher: I have here some pictures about the selection that we have
just read. Retell the events by sequencing the pictures as they
happened in the story.
(Teachers are advised to prepare pictures of the events in the
story to help/enable the pupils to sequence/retell some of the
events in the story.)

Guide the pupils to make generalizations by asking:


 How do we sequence/retell the events of the story in the right

right order by using the appropriate signal words.)

G. Application:
Sequencing/ Retelling Events Through Sentence Strips Using
Signal Words. (The teacher will group the class into 4 or 5. She will
prepare at least 4 to 5 sets of sentence strips summarizing the whole
story. Each group will be given at least 7 mins. to work on the task. The
group will paste/post their finished work in a Manila paper.)
NOTE: The same sets of sentences may be given to the 4 or 5 groups to
check the output of the individual group with the work of the other groups
and for easier assessment of the learning of the whole class.

H. Assessment:
Read and understand the sentences well. Sequence/ retell the story
based on the signal words at the beginning of the sentences. Number the
sentences from 1-5.

“The History of Catbalogan”

A long long time ago, there was once a place beside the sea
in the island of Samar where lots of “balaug”or vines grew. When
the seas got rough during bad weather or when the monsoons blew
during the months of July, August, and September, fishermen and
seafarers from nearby islands would seek shelter in the seacoast
where lots of “balaug” grew.

Once the weather has improved and the men would return to
their homes, they would tell their love ones that they stayed in a
safe place where “kabalaugan” or “katbalaugan” abound.

“Kabaulagan” or “katbalaugan” means a place where


seafarers, fishermen or sailors take shelter or cover and are
detained.

As years went by, the men brought their families to live in
