Tutorial-7

1. A steel pipe with an inside dia. of 20 cm used to transfer 1000 kg/min, molasses having a
viscosity of 500 C.P. and a density of1.6 gm/cc. The line is to be 1000 m long, and
delivery end id to be 5m higher than the intake. Calculate:
I. The pressure drop due to friction expressed as kg/cm2
II. If the overall efficiency of the pump is 60%, what will be the horsepower
required.
2. Calculate the power required and the pressure which should be developed by a pump of
70% efficiency in order to send 60 Kg/min of 98% sulfuric acid at 25 0C from a tank at
atmospheric pressure through 300 m of 5 cm ID, steel pipe to a tank of 2.0 Kg/cm2
pressure, where the level is 3m above that in the lower tank. Density and viscosity of the
acid may be taken as 1.8 gm/cc and 26 C.P. respectively.
3. Determine the cost of pumping 300,000 liter/hr. of an oil having specific gravity of 0.9
and viscosity 30 CP through a pipeline, 25 cm dia. and 50 km long. It may be assumed
that the efficiency of the pump together with motor is 50% and the power costs 40 paise
per Kwh. The pipe-line is horizontal. 1 hp= 0.736 kwh & f=0.046/Re0.2
4. A centrifugal fan is used to tale flue gas at rest and at a pressure of 20.0 in (737 mm) Hg
and a temp. of 200 0F (93.3 0C) and discharge it at a pressure of 30.1 in. (765 mm) Hg
and a velocity of 150 ft/sec. (45.7 m/s). Calculate the power needed to move 10, 000 std
ft3/min (16,990 m3/h) of gas using standard conditions of 29.92 in. hg and 32 0F. The
efficiency of the fan is 65% and molecular wt. of the gas is 31.3 (given that molal volume
of gas at 320F and 29.92 in. Hg pressure is 359 ft3/lb.mol.).
