PROBLEM SET 1

Conic Sections: Circles

Name: ____________________________________________ Section: ______________ Date: ____________

I. Determine the center and radius of the following circles. (2pts each)
1. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 12 = 0

2. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 14𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 37 = 0

3. 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 + 8𝑦 = 0

4. 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑦 2 − 12𝑥 + 6𝑦 − 12 = 0

5. 5𝑥 2 + 5𝑦 2 + 80𝑥 − 50𝑦 + 320 = 0

II. Find the standard and general forms of the equation given the following. (4 pts each)
1. Center (−1, −1), radius is 5

2. Center (2, 5), diameter is 24

3. Center (−3, 6), radius is √5

4. Center (3, 4), diameter is 6

5. Center (3, −5), radius is √11

III. Given the following parts, find the standard and general forms of the equation of the
circle and sketch the graph. (9 pts each)
1. Center at (1, 4); (3, 6) is a point on the circle.

2. The endpoints of the diameter are (−2, 4) and (3, −5).

3. (1, 1) is a point on the circle; radius is 3.

4. The diameter with length 10 has endpoints (−2, −4) and (5, 6).

5. Center at (0, 3); diameter has length 8.
