2 The exterior angle of a triangle

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE TRIANGLES SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Single triangles

Two solutions are provided for each problem. The first is a quick solution while the second is a more
formal solution providing reasons.
Diagram Informal More formal with reasons
1 x = 38 + 75 x = 38 + 75 (exterior angle of triangle)
= 113  x = 113

2 x = 69 x = 69 (equal angles in isosceles triangle)

y = 2 × 69 y = 69 + 69 (exterior angle of triangle)
= 138  y = 138

3 x = 136 – 90 x + 90 = 136 (exterior angle of triangle)

= 46  x = 46

TASK 2 Combining angle properties

There are many ways to solve some of these problems. One formal solution is provided for each.
Diagram Solution with reasons
1 x = 82 + 30 (exterior angle of triangle)
 x = 112
x + y = 180 (adjacent supplementary angles)
112 + y = 180
 y = 68

2 x + x + 90 = 180 (angle sum of isosceles triangle)

2x = 90
 x = 45
y = 90 + 45 (exterior angle of triangle)
 y = 135
x = z (alternate angles in parallel lines)
 z = 45

5.2 The exterior angle of a triangle

3 x + 140 = 157 (exterior angle of triangle)

 x = 17
y = 157 (corresponding angles in parallel lines)

4 x = 20 (corresponding angles in parallel lines)

y = x + 85 (exterior angle of triangle)
= 20 + 85
 y = 105
x = z (vertically opposite angles)
 z = 20
5 w = 35 (equal angles in isosceles triangle)
x = w + 35 (exterior angle of triangle)
= 35 + 35
 x = 70
y + w = 180 (adjacent supplementary angles)
y + 35 = 180
 y = 145
x + x + z = 180 (angle sum of isosceles triangle)
70 + 70 + z = 180
 z = 40
6 (x + 30) + 65 = 180 (co-interior angles in parallel lines)
 x = 85
y = x + 65 (exterior angle of triangle)
y = 85 + 65
 y = 150

TASK 3 Sum of exterior angles

1 x + 80 = 180 (adjacent supplementary angles)

 x = 100
y + 70 = 180 (adjacent supplementary angles)
 y = 110
z + 30 = 180 (adjacent supplementary angles)
 z = 150
x + y + z = 100 + 110 + 150
= 360

2 If you cut out the three exterior angles of any

triangle, and place them together with their
vertices touching, they will form an angle of
360° (a complete revolution).
