There has been controversy about whether teaching primary school students to grow vegetables

and tend to animals brings more benefits or drawbacks. From my perspective, the advantages of
this phenomenon clearly surpass its demerits.

It is understandable why some people think that acquiring knowledge about growing plants and
keeping animals is detrimental. One clear disadvantage of introducing schoolchildren to farming
and gardening is that it can be costly. The reason is because schools have to allocate funds for
equipment, materials, and the maintenance of gardens and farms. Therefore, schools with small
budgets cannot afford the necessary resources. Furthermore, another drawback of teaching
students to cultivate crops and care for animals is that teachers need supervision and monitor
students's activities. For instance, teachers should ensure safety for their pupils when they
interact with animals and plants in the garden. As a result, students can injure one another if
teachers lack close supervision when they have to be in charge of large-sized classes.

However, I believe there are stronger benefits to teaching students to tend to animals and grow
vegetables. One advantage of this practice is that students can obtain information about valuable
life skills. Through this practice, students can learn how to grow their own food and the
importance of suitable farming practices. Such a benefit can be especially important for students
in urban areas, as they frequently have limited exposure to agriculture. By teaching them to
produce homegrown vegetables and care for animals, schools can help them reconnect with the
natural world. Moreover, students are taught many important virtues, such as compassion and
patience. The process of raising produce requires patience as they wait for the plant to grow.
These experiences contribute to a more well-rounded development for students at these ages.

In conclusion, it is apparent that teaching elementary school children to care for animals and
plants offers more advantages than disadvantages. With adequate government funding, we can
easily address the challenges faced by schools and teachers.
