Station One: Write a short reflection answering: How does

circadian rhythm disruption impact daily functioning?

The Circadian Rhythm tells the body when to sleep, wake, and release hormones. A difference in time
zones, too much lighting, or late night work can disrupt this because the body’s clock in the SCN would
be thrown off track. To have a healthy circadian rhythm you need natural light, a consistent sleep
schedule, and limited screen time.

Station Two: Answer the following: Why is REM sleep important

for memory consolidation? How do the stages repeat throughout
a night’s sleep?

REM sleep is important for memory consolidation because the brain is active during that stage and it will
transform the short term memory into the long term memory. This is also the stage of tissue repair and
growth, which is especially important in children. The stages repeat throughout a night’s sleep in the way
that after the REM stage is over, the brain will change into N1 or N2 stage of sleep and keep going until it
reaches the REM sleep again. The stages of sleep repeat in 90 minute cycles.

Station Three: Write a paragraph summarizing your group’s

favorite theory and why you agree with it.

Our group's favorite theory is the Memory Consolidation theory. The theory suggests that sleep is
essential for making new long term memories from short term as well as processing memories. Memories
can be found in dreams and as such, REM sleep is when the brain organizes new information and
experiences learned.

Station Four: How might each sleep disorder impact a person's

daily life and overall well-being?

A sleep disorder will impact a person’s life and well being by disrupting their sleep cycle. A proper sleep
cycle is important because sleep is how the body recuperates and processes information. Failure to do
so as caused by disorders like sleep apnea or insomnia that disrupt sleep, will cause overall well being to
fall.

Station Five: Write a short reflection answering: Why is sleep

critical for your ability to function in school and everyday life?
Provide examples from your own experience.
Sleep is important in everyday life because sleep is necessary to process information and save it to long
term memory, such as that learned in school. Furthermore, sleep is important to recuperate and for
hormones to help cells regenerate. Additionally, getting enough sleep helps you to focus and perform
better when doing daily activities. An example of how lack of sleep impairs the ability to function in school
and everyday life is once I only sleep 5 hours for finishing a mastery assignment, and the next day when I
go to the school I feel I am dreaming and can’t listen to the lecture and focus.

Station Six: Write a brief paragraph for each theory, summarizing

how it interprets the dream content.

The Information Processing theory is the theory that sleep and dreams are used to store memories from
short to long term. The Activation Synthesis theory means that dreams are the visualization of nonsense
during sleep. The Test dream represents the first theory because it shows how the kid’s memory of his
test is visualized in his dreams and the second theory is also present because the problems are
becoming increasingly nonsensical.

Reflection: After completing all six stations, reflect on the

differences between normal waking consciousness and the
various altered states you explored, such as sleep and dreaming.
Answer the following questions in a short reflection:

- How does your understanding of sleep and consciousness

impact your daily routine?

- What is the most surprising fact you learned today about the
states of consciousness?

Zifei: The most surprising fact about the states of consciousness

that I learned today is the different time period, amount of sleep,
and also the sleep quality will cause the states of consciousness.
As I learned today that during

Anirudh: My understanding of sleep and consciousness impacts

my daily routine by knowing how sleep is essential for memory
consolidation while being in a state of consciousness is being
awake. Learning about sleep has taught me to sure I have
enough sleep in order to function properly. This is so I can avoid

Muhammadh: Sleep and consciousness are two different things. Sleep is when your consciousness
becomes less active to regenerate and improve quality of life. The consciousness is never truly fully
inactive. Sleep is necessary for dead cells to regenerate and help the mind rest. This allows for focus to
improve for later in the day.Furthermore, sleep is when memories are transferred to long term and
information is processed. My daily routine is impacted because now I know that sleep is important not
only for rest, but also for information proccessing, focus, and cellular regeneraation.

Danika: There are many differences between normal waking consciousness and altered states. In an
altered state such as sleep, it might seem as if your full body is shut down, but it’s actually not. Your body
is working hard to repair tissues, promote growth, and turn short term memory into long term memories.
My understanding of sleep impacts my route because I know the importance of getting enough sleep, and
so I can improve my schedule so that I am getting the amount of sleep I need. La
