Rubrics

Criteria Description
Meeting deadlines Late by 1 week 1 mark
Late by > 7 days  0 mark
Use of Mathematics Sophisticated, rigorous and precise Mathematics, appropriate to
the level the student is studying (HL/SL) is expected.

*Sophistication in Mathematics may include understanding and

use of challenging Math concepts, looking at a problem from
different perspectives and lining different areas in Math.
* Rigour involves clarity of logic and language when making
Mathematical arguments and calculations.
*Precise math is error free and uses an appropriate level of
accuracy at all times.

If the level of Math used is below the level the student is

studying, he/she will get maximum of 2 marks in this criterion.
Use of technology Use of appropriate ICT tools such as GDC, spreadsheets,
mathematical softwares etc
Personal Engagement Addressing personal connection with the topic, creating
mathematical models for real-world situation, considering
historical and/or global perspective.
Reflection Reviews, analyses and evaluates the exploration.
Discussing strengths, weaknesses and further scope of work.
Reflection should be throughout the exploration and a conclusive
one in the end.
Presentation The exploration should be well-organized, concise and easy to
follow. It should have an introduction with a clear aim and
rationale and a conclusion reflecting fulfilment of aim. Graphs
and tables should be numbered, labelled and attached at
appropriate places. Use of correct mathematical notation and
terminology is required.
Deadlines
Topic submission: - 24th October 2024
Submission of 1st draft: 18th November 2024
Assessment of 1st draft and feedback by teacher: 1st to 16th December 2024
Submission of final exploration: 26th December 2024

Some ideas for topics for Maths: A&A and A&I HL students:
1) Research on the growth of internet users in India (or worldwide).
In the above exploration, one can collect data on the number of internet users for
different years or the percentage of the total population using internet for all those
years. The data can be plotted and a relationship can be modelled between time and
number of internet users. The same model can be used for forecasting purposes.

2) A study of the rise in the number of cars and the number of Asthma patients in a
particular place.
In the above exploration, firstly one can collect the data for number of cars on road
against time. Data on number of Asthma patients also need to be collected for the
same number of years. The two variables can be individually modelled against time
and the same model can be used for predicting number of cars or number of
patients for the next 5 years. Also, the correlation between rise in number of cars
and patients of respiratory diseases can be checked.

3) To find the surface area and cost of cleaning of any famous monuments or
buildings or to find the height of building using trigonometry.

Some ideas for topics for Maths: A&I SL students:

1. Finding the highest point of your school building using Trigonometry.
You can calculate angle of inclination using clinometer and using trigonometric
ratios find the height. Comparison of results with actual height.
2. Minimum cost of packaging 100 ml of fruit juice in a tetra pack. The packaging
should be cost effective and easy to transport.
3. The rising trend of population in India, model a function connecting population
against time using technology and GDC. The same model can be used for
forecasting purposes.
However, one can choose a topic of their choice too.

Basic requirements:
1) Each exploration should be 15 to 20 pages long.
2) Each exploration should have an introduction. The aim or purpose of the
exploration and the rationale (why you chose the topic) should be clearly stated
in the introduction.
3) The exploration should be concise and easy to follow.
4) There should be adequate use of technology.
5) Significant evidence of personal engagement should be displayed throughout the
exploration.
6) Mathematics used in the exploration should be of the same standard or above
the course the student is pursuing and not below the standard.
7) The conclusion must emphasize on the fulfillment of the aim.
8) Immediate references of the sites used and bibliography is a must.
9) Font Size should be 12 and Font style should be Times New Roman with double
spacing.
