□ Accomplish and submit necessary session assessments and tasks

Course Outcomes
At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:

2. Determine the benefits and challenges of cultural diversity in the workplace.
3. Recognize the different approaches and techniques of diversity management in
the hospitality and tourism industry.

WEEK 2 – ITTS 111 / SRP

Discussion Sheet
One of the prerequisites to successful mass tourism is convenient access to
destinations. To be accessible, a place must have bot the transportation systems,
infrastructure and superstructure

 Transport industry has acquired a fundamental place in the global network

system by facilitating mobility of persons and goods from one place to another
through various modes of transportation.
 The development of tourism depends on the transport industry. A tourist
always thinks of safe, comfortable and convenient mode of transport. And of
course, cost and time are also important considerations while deciding on the
mode of travel.

What is transportation?

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another. The
term is derived from the Latin trans ("across") and portare ("to carry").

Industries which have the business of providing equipment, actual transport,

transport of people or goods and services used in transport of goods or people make
up a large broad and important sector of most national economies, and are
collectively referred to as transport industries

Why is transportation important?

 The transportation sector is vital to the success of our industry. Put simply, if
we can’t move people from place to place — whether by air, sea, or land — we
don’t have an industry.
 The development of transportation systems is one of the key factors in the
growth of international tourism
 Coupled with improvements in infrastructure, better transportation technology
has enabled people to travel at greater speed, comfort and convenience.

WEEK 2 – ITTS 111 / SRP

Passenger Transportation Structure

Modes of Transportation

Water Transport

Advantages

1. Sea transportation offers the highest carrying capacity. A ship can even carry
several airplanes.
2. Waterways are the gifts of nature and therefore no investment is required for
their maintenance.
3. The operating cost, in case of sea transport, is also less when compared with
the other modes of transport.
4. There is no problem of traffic congestion in the mid-sea. This avoids delay.
5. Accident during the voyage is a rare occurrence. Loss of goods due to accident,
therefore, is also avoided.

WEEK 2 – ITTS 111 / SRP

Disadvantages

1. It is the slowest mode of transport. Perishable goods cannot be sent by sea

route.
2. It is very much affected by weather and climatic conditions.
3. Lack of stable political conditions in many countries
4. Sea transport doesn’t offer any scope for extension. All other modes of
transport can be extended to newer areas.
5. There are many formalities to be complied with in sending shipments.

Air Transport

Advantages

1. It is the fastest mode of transport.

2. There are generally no physical barriers to air transport. The path is always
free.
3. For transporting easily perishable commodities like fruits and flowers air
transport is the best mode.
4. As there is always strict adherence to the time schedule, delay is avoided.
5. It offers maximum safety.

Disadvantages

1. Air travel is expensive.

2. The carrying capacity of planes, when compared with ships, is much less.
3. Like sea transport, air transport is also affected by bad weather conditions.
4. High cost of construction and maintenance
5. International restrictions or rules to be observed.
6. Unsuitable for heavy bulk cargo

Road Transport

Advantages

1. Road transports are economical.

2. Door to Door Service
3. It is flexible.
4. The overhead expenses are also less in the case of road transport. Rail
transport, for example, requires the construction of railway stations, erection of
signals and so on.

WEEK 2 – ITTS 111 / SRP

5. It gives access even to the common man.

Disadvantages

1. The carrying capacity is less.

2. Its efficiency is very much determined by the conditions of roads. Bad roads
may cause such problems as breakdown and result in delay in the
consignment reaching the market place or in going to your destination.
3. Limited speed
4. It is not suitable for carrying goods to very long distances, i.e., for foreign
destinations.
5. During rainy season, the roads become unsafe and unfit for transportation.

Rail Transport

Advantages

1. Rail transports are the most suitable for carrying goods to distant places.
2. It helps to transport bulky and heavy goods.
3. More dependable than road transport
4. Railway accidents are much less when compared to accidents in highways.
5. Long distance travel cheaper and ability to view scenery en route is the
advantage of railways.

Disadvantages

1. Not all places are connected by trains.

2. Trains cannot carry goods to the doorstep. From the destination point, one has
to arrange to collect and carry the goods to the intended place.
3. Railways have fixed routes. This mode of transport, therefore, lacks flexibility.
4. Cost and maintenance

WEEK 2 – ITTS 111 / SRP

Intermodal Transport

 Use of more than one mode of transportation to move a shipment to its

destination
 Increased global trade has also increased use of intermodal transportation
 More convenient for shippers (one entity provides the complete service)
 Key issue involves the exchange of information to facilitate transfer between
different transport modes

Pipeline Transport

Pipeline transport is the transportation of goods through a pipe. Liquids and gases
are transported in pipelines and any chemically stable substance can be sent
through a pipeline.

Advantages:

▫ Ideally suited to transport the liquids and gases. ▫ Pipelines can be laid through
difficult terrains as well as under water. ▫ It involves very low energy consumption. ▫
It needs very little maintenance. ▫ Pipelines are safe, accident-free and environmental
friendly.

Disadvantages:

▫ It is not flexible, i.e., it can be used only for a few fixed points. ▫ Its capacity cannot
be increased once it is laid. ▫ It is difficult to make security arrangements for
pipelines. ▫ Underground pipelines cannot be easily repaired and detection of leakage
is also difficult.

Conclusion

Transportation is the most crucial component of the tourism infrastructure. It is

required not only for reaching the destination but also visiting the site and moving
about at the destination. Variety in modes of transportation adds color to the overall
tourism experience.

To attract customers as well as take them around an attraction, destination

developers have used many forms of transport to move people around. These novel
modes of transport ensure that major exhibits are viewed in a certain sequence and
ensure that the crowd.
