Khmer Grammar

A/ Present tense form:


-Affirmative : Subject + Verb + (Verb )+ (Object/Complement)
Ex1: I love you. : Khnhom srolanh neak./ Bong srolanh oun.
Ex2: He cries. : Kort yum.
Ex3: He wants to leave. : Kort chong chak chenh. (chong= to want; chak chenh= to leave)
Ex4: I want to drink water. : Khnhom chong pheok teok.

-Negative : Subjet + “Ort/Men” + Verb + Verb + (Object) + “te”.


Ex1: I don’t like pizza. : Khnhom ot/men choul chet pizza te.
Ex2: I don’t like eating pizza. : Khnhom ot/men chol chet nham pizza te.
Ex3: I don’t speak Khmer. : Khnhom ot/men ches niyeay phea sa Khmer te.
Ex4: Sorry, I don’t understand. : Som toh, khnhom men/ot yul te.

-Interrogative1 : “Ter” + subject pronoun + Verb + “te”?


Ex1: How are you? : Ter neak sok sabbay chea te?
Ex2: Are you hurt? : Ter neak chheu te?
Ex3: Do you like it? : Ter neak choul chet te?

-Interrogative2: “Ter” + subject pronoun + Verb + “Wh question form”?


Ex1: What are you thinking about? : Ter neak kompong kit avey?
Ex2: How can you go there? : Ter neak tov douy robeab na?
Ex3: When did he leave? : Ter kort tov/ chak chenh nov pel na?
Ex4: Who do you love? : Ter neak srolanh no nar?
Ex5: Where do you live? : Ter neak ros nov tina?
Ex6: What kind of person do you like? : Ter neak choul chet monus brorphet na?
Ex7: How long have you been here? : Ter neak nov tinis taing pi pel na?
Ex8: Which one do you need? : Ter neak trov ka mouy na?
Ex9: How old are you? : Ter neak ar yu pun marn?
Ex10: How much do you want? : Ter neak trov ka pun marn?
*Ex11: Why do you cry? : Het avey neak yum?
B- Past tense form:
-Affirmative : Subject + “ban” + Verb + Verb + (Object/Complement)
Ex1: I ate fruits. : Khnhom ban nham phlae chheu.
Ex2: I drank water. : Khnhom ban pheok teok.

-Negative : Subjet + “Ort/Men” + “ban” + Verb + Verb + (Object) + “te”.


Ex1: I did not go. : Khnom men/ot ban tov te.
Ex2: I did not drink beer. : Khnhom ot/men ban pheok sra beer te.

-Interrogative 1 : “Ter” + subject pronoun + “ban” + Verb + “te reu”?


Ex1: You did not go there? : Ter neak men/ot ban tov te reu?
Ex2: You did not read book? : Ter neak men/ot ban arn seav phov tea reu?
-Interrogative 2: “Ter” + subject pronoun + “ban” + Verb + “Wh question form”?
Ex1: What did you do? : Ter neak ban tveu avey?
Ex2: When did she leave? : Ter neang ban chak chenh pi pel na?

C- Future tense form:


-Affirmative : Subject + “noeng” + Verb + Verb + (Object/Complement)
Ex1: I will go there. : Khnhom noeng tov ti nus.
Ex2: I am going to get married next week. : Khnhom noeng reabkar nov sabpada krouy.
Ex3: We are going to stay here one week. : Yeung noeng snak nov ti nis mouy sabpada.

-Negative : Subjet + “noeng” + “Ort/Men” + Verb + Verb + (Object) + “te”.


Ex1: I will be not going to class tomorrow. : Nov thngai sa ek, khnhom noeng men/ot tov sala
rean te.
Ex2: I am not going to leave you. : Khnhom noeng men/ot chak chenh pi neak te.

-Interrogative1 : “Ter” + subject pronoun + “noeng” + Verb + “te”?


Ex1: Are you going? : Ter neak noeng tov te?

-Interrogative2: “Ter” + subject pronoun + “noeng” + Verb + “Wh question form”?


Ex1: What will you do? : Ter neak noeng tveu avey/douch mdech?
