Preamble
Aim of this note is to present the design of pile foundation and pier for Expansion joint PIER P51 of the flyover
at Kalyan phata junction on old NH4. The pier supporting 30m +30m span PSC I Girder
superstructure.
This design note pertains to design of Substructure and Foundation for a Expansion joint pier at P51,
Superstructure of PSC girders consists of 3 span structural contunuous unit
Piers have been identified based on their numbers as presented in the overall layout
and GADs.
Design note presents the following:
This design note is to be read in conjunction with the corresponding MIDAS file and relevant drawings.

b. All these forces & moments are appiled in the MIDAS substructure & foundation
model on the pier cap top node in different load cases.
c.All load cases are combined as per IRC 6: 2017 and IRC 78 :2014 combination rules
in MIDAS.
d. Analysis is performed and force resultants are extracted at required level /location/
components of substructure and foundation.
e. For the obtained force resultants for pier and piles (checked for geotechnical capacity)
are designed as biaxially loaded member in MIDAS GSD.
f. Necessary ductile detailing calculation (for pier) & capacity design calculation
(for bearings, piers and piles) are then presented separately.

A separate MIDAS model is created for extracting reactions due to vertical loads on the
superstructure.
Reactions for cases Dead load (DL), SIDL-Fixed i.e Crash barrier, median and utilities (SIDL-F),
SIDL-Variable i.e Wearing coat (SIDL-V) and Vehicular live load combinations
producing worst effects on the centre of pier cap top are extracted and applied as loads on the
MIDAS substructure and foundation model along with other horizontal (Longitudinal and transverse)
loads.
Following table indicates loads extracted from superstructure MIDAS model on pier cap centre-top

All vehicular live loads presented above are pure values i.e. NO reduction , impact or
congestion factor has been considered.
Thus, these loads have been modified with appropriate congestion factor
based on recommendations of IRC 6:2017.
Note: No Impact factor has been considered for design of foundation and substructure.
Congestion factor 1.15
Reduction Factor ------- For 2 Lanes : No reduction
One Class 70R (W) occupies 2 design lanes and reduction factor is considered accordingly.
As per IRC 6 :2017 clause 204.4, congestion factor shall not be considered for MT case.
Congestion factor and corresponding reduction factor is considered

9 Seismic Force
In order to obtain time period of Substructure and Foundation, a line model is developed in
MIDAS with piles modelled upto the depth of fixity.
Further, as per Cl. 5.2.1 of IRC SP 114:2018 horizontal deflections at pier cap top are
computed by applying a 100 kN horizontal force @ the COM of superstructure
in transverse direction and @ the top of bearings in Longitudinal Direction.

Since there is no net tension in the piles parallel to trans. Face of the pier no BM causing tension at top
is there, thus, minimum tension reinforecemnt is not provided
Check for side face Reinforcement
Minimum surface reinforcement /m = 0.01 * Act
= 0.01 * cover*1000

= 750 mm /mm
Refer Cl. 16.5.4 of IRC 112-2011
Diameter of bar provided = 16 mm
Spacing required = 268.08 mm

40 Pile Cap Check for One- Way Shear and Two- Way Shear
Traffic Direction
Note-As distance 'd' lies beyond the pile critical shear is checked at face of pile.
Shear Design
VRd,s = Asw * z * fywd * cot θ
S
Assuming, θ = 21.8
cotθ = 2.50 tanθ = 0.40
2
(A sw / S) = 0.155 mm / mm per m width
V Rd,max = 5447 kN OK
per m width
