5 Design Process
b. All these forces & moments are appiled in the MIDAS substructure & foundation
model on the pier cap top node in different load cases.

c.All load cases are combined as per IRC 6: 2017 and IRC 78 :2014 combination rules
in MIDAS.

d. Analysis is performed and force resultants are extracted at required level /location/
components of substructure and foundation.

e. For the obtained force resultants for pier and piles (checked for geotechnical capacity)
are designed as biaxially loaded member in MIDAS GSD.

f. Necessary ductile detailing calculation (for pier) & capacity design calculation
(for bearings, piers and piles) are then presented separately.

9.1 Time Period of Substructure and Foundation

In order to obtain time period of Substructure and Foundation, a line model is developed in
MIDAS with piles modelled upto the depth of fixity.

Further, as per Cl. 5.2.1 of IRC SP 114:2018 horizontal deflections at pier cap top are
computed by applying a 100 kN horizontal force @ the COM of superstructure
in transverse direction and @ the top of bearings in Longitudinal Direction.

Deflection Results are presented in table below:

Traffic Direction

Effective depth of the pile cap d = 1702.5 mm

Maximum load from the pile = 8138 kN
Width of pile cap in Longitudinal direction = 5 m
Length of pile cap in consideration ( Transverse direction ) = 1.750 m
Area of cap under consideration = 8.750 m2
Weight of pile cap = 393.75 kN
Weight of the soil above the pile cap = 78.75 kN
Distance between pier face to pile centre av = 1.050 m
As per IRC 112:2011, α ≥ 0.5d av 0.851 m
Reduction factor for stress ( α/2d) = 0.25

Net vertical force = 1562.0 kN

Hence, Shear stress v ED = 0.185 N/mm 2

Note-As distance 'd' lies beyond the pile critical shear is checked at face of pile.

Shear resistance of the section

v Rd ≥ v min …Refer Cl.10.4.5 of IRC 112-2011
For calculation of V Rd ρl = √(ρl*ρz ) …Refer Eq.10.35 of IRC 112-2011
ρl = 0.00193
v Rd = [0.12K * (80ρ 1 fck) 1/3
] = 0.308 N/mm2
v min = [0.031*k 3/2 * fck 1/2 ] = 0.324 N/mm2

Hence, shear resistance of the section

v Rd = 0.324 N/mm 2 > v ED = 0.18 N/mm 2
Shear reinforcement is NOT required

S
Assuming, θ = 21.8
cotθ = 2.50 tanθ = 0.40
