What are Seismic Waves?
-are the waves of energy that travel either

There are Two Types of Seismic Wave

(Lower Frequency)
Two Types of Body Waves
- Primary Waves or P Waves
- Secondary Waves or S Waves

Primary Waves or P Waves


- these are the fastest kind of seismic
waves
- first to arrive at a seismic station and
be recorded in the seismograph
- the P waves can move through solid
rocks and fluids
- they push and pull the rocks as they
move though just like the sound waves
that push and pull the air

Secondary Waves or S Waves


- S waves are slower than P Waves
- second to arrive at the seismic station
- can only move through solid rocks, not
through any liquid medium
- these waves move rock particles up
and down, or side-to-side
perpendicular to the direction in which
the waves are traveling.
