RAMSAR SITES OF ODISHA BY Abhijit Sir


RAMSAR Convention -
• It is an international treaty established by UNESCO for the
Conservation and wise use of Wetlands .
• It is named after the Iranian city of Ramsar on the Caspian sea , where
the treaty was signed on 2 February 1971.
• Known officially as the convection on wetlands of international
importance especially as waterfowl Habitat [ or more recently just the
convection on wetlands ] it came into force in 1975.
Ramsar sites in Odisha -
• 1-Ansupa Lake
• 2- Bhitarkanika Mangroves
• 3- Chilika Lake
• 4- Hirakud Reservoir
• 5- Satkosia Gorge
• 6- Tampara Lake
1- Ansupa Lake -
• Ansupa lake is a horseshoe – shaped fresh water Oxbow lake on the
Left bank of The Mahanadi , in Cuttack district , Odisha
• It is a fresh water lake situated amidst the saranda hills and enclosed
by bamboo tree greenery and mango trees and acts as a shelter for
the migratory birds in the winter season .
• This lake has been designated as a protected Ramsar site since 2021.
2- Bhitarkanika Mangroves-
• Bhitarkanika Mangroves is a mangrove wetland in Odisha it is located
in the Brahmani river and Baitarani River deltas .
• In 1975 an area was declared the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary .
The Core area of the Sanctuary , it was declared Bhitarkanika
National Park.
• The Gahirmatha Marine wildlife sanctuary , which bounds the
Bhitarkanika Wildlife sanctuary to the east , and encompasses
Gahirmatha beach and an adjacent portion of the Bay Bengal.
• Bhitarkanika Mangroves were designated a Ramsar wetland of
International importance in 2002.
3-Chilika Lake -
• Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon , spread over the Puri , Khorda
and Ganjam district of Odisha state on the east coast of India at the
mouth of the Daya River flowing into the Bay of Bengal.
• It is the biggest lake of India after Vembanad Lake . This lake is the
largest coastal lagoon in India and the largest brackish water lagoon in
the World after The New Caledonian barrier reef .
• It has been listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site .
• Salinity varies by region from nearly freshwater where rivers flow in
to oceanic salinity levels due to tidal influx.
4-Hirakud Reservoir -
• Hirakud Reservoir is one of the largest man made reservoir in India ,
built across the Mahanadi River by combination of earth and modern
dams .
• The reservoir helps regulate the water level of the river and
moderates the impact of floods in the Mahanadi Delta .
• It provides habitat for over 130 bird species and about 54 fish with
one classified as endangered and six others as near – threatened .
5- Satkosia Gorge -
• Established in 1976 as a wildlife sanctuary , Satkosia Gorge in Anugul
district of Odisha is a mosaic of river , marshes and evergreen forests
at the meeting point of two biogeographic regions , the Deccan
peninsula and eastern ghats.
• These wetland habitats support a variety of plants and animal
communities .
• The wetland is also known for providing a variety of ecosystem
services surrounding communities like fishing , recharging ground
water , climate regulation and safety from floods .
