Nitocote EPS
Section A : General Comments
Comments
High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 350C, the following guidelines are adopted as good
working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding
exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to keep
cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the material itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a continuous
process.
Equipment
It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement

Protective clothing : Protective overalls

: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask

Preparation equipment : Proprietary blasting equipment

Mixing equipment : 1 KW slow speed drill, 400 or 500 rpm, plus Fosroc
Mixing Paddle MR3

Application equipment : Stiff brush

: Graco spray equipment

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that repairs are completed satisfactorily so that the long term performance of the
materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials themselves Fosroc is also able to
offer technical assistance and training.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Preparation

 Following the surface preparations, care should be taken to ensure that any exposed blow holes
are filled with Nitomortar TC2000.

1.1 Concrete Surfaces

1.1.1 All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from dust, laitance, old coatings and standing
water.

1.1.2 Oil and/or grease contamination should be treated with Fosroc Chemical Degreaser, followed
by water or steam washing.

1.2 Metal surfaces

1.2.1 Any metal surfaces should be blasted to a bright finish, meeting the requirements of Swedish
Standrd SA 2½ or equal.

2.0 Mixing

2.1 The contents of the resin base tin should be thoroughly stirred to disperse any possible
settlement.

2.2 The entire contents of the hardener should be poured into the base container, and the two
materials mixed thoroughly until both uniform colour and consistency are obtained.

2.3 It is recommended that the two components are mixed together mechanically; using a slow
speed, electric drill, with a Fosroc Mixing Paddle MR3. Mixing should be carried out
continuously for 3 to 5 minutes.

3.0 Application

3.1 Hand application

3.1.1 Nitocote EPS can be hand-applied using a brush or roller.

3.1.2 The first coat should be firmly applied and scrubbed well into the surface, ensuring that a
continuous film results of uniform dry film thickness of about 250 microns.

3.1.3 The second coat will cover more readily than the first, and should be applied within the
‘overcoating times’ of a dry film thickness of about 250 microns. It is further recommended that
a contrasting colour is chosen for the second coat, to ensure unbroken coverage.
Method statement constructive solutions

3.2 Spray application

3.2.1 Faster rates of application are possible using airless spray equipment, Consult the local Fosroc
office prior to application for technical advice.

4.0 Overcoating

4.1 Any application of Nitocote EPS which has become damaged can be readily overcoated.

4.2 The existing surface should be well abraded, using a stiff wire brush, or similar, to ensure that a
good mechanical bond will be achieved between the two layers.

4.3 Overcoating works can then proceed as for new work.

5.0 Cleaning

5.1 Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Solvent 102 immediately after use.

Section C : Approval and variations

This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a ‘standard proposal’ for the application of Nitocote
EPS. It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application.

Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in writing,
prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for variations to the
above method statement under any other condition.

Test Details
Purpose of test To determine the performance of a product when it is subjected to the
conditions of the test specified in BS 476: Part 6: 1989+A1: 2009, "Fire tests on
building materials and structures, method for fire propagation for products".

The test was performed in accordance with the procedure specified in BS 476:
Part 6: 1989+A1: 2009, and this report should be read in conjunction with that
British Standard.

Scope of test BS 476: Part 6: 1989+A1: 2009 specifies a method of test, the result being
expressed as a fire propagation index, that provides a comparative measure of
the contribution to the growth of fire made by an essentially flat material,
composite or assembly. It is primarily intended for the assessment of the
performance of internal wall and ceiling linings.

Fire test study Certain aspects of some fire test specifications are open to different
group/EGOLF interpretations. The Fire Test Study Group and EGOLF have identified a
number of such areas and have agreed Resolutions which define common
agreement of interpretations between fire test laboratories which are members
of the Groups. Where such Resolutions are applicable to this test they have
been followed.

Instruction to test The test was conducted on the 5th September 2014 at the request of Al Gurg
Fosroc LLC, the sponsor of the test.

Provision of test The specimens were supplied by the sponsor of the test. Exova
specimens Warringtonfire was not involved in any selection or sampling procedure.

Conditioning of The specimens for testing to BS 476: Part 6: 1989+A1: 2009 together with the
specimens specimens for testing to BS 476: Part 7: 1997 were received on the 25th July
2014.

Prior to the tests, all of the specimens were conditioned to constant mass at a
temperature of 23 ± 2°C and a relative humidity of 50 ± 5%. One specimen
from the total sample submitted for test was selected for constant mass
verification.

Form in which the Composite - Combination of materials which are generally recognised in
specimens were building constructions as discrete entities e.g. coated or laminated materials.
tested

Exposed face The coated face of the specimens was exposed to the heating conditions of the
test.

Test Results
Results A total of three specimens were tested. The laboratory record sheet relating to
each of the test specimens is appended to this report (refer to Tables 1, 2 and
3).

Throughout the test on each specimen careful observation was made of the
product's behaviour within the apparatus and special note was taken of any of
the phenomena listed in clause 9.2 of the Standard. None of the listed
phenomena was observed and the test results on all three specimens tested
were valid.

The following test results were obtained for the product.

Fire propagation index, I = 10.9

Sub index, i1 = 0.8
Sub index, i2 = 9.5
Sub index, i3 = 0.6

NOTE: If a suffix 'R' is included in the above fire propagation index, I, then this
indicates that the results should be treated with caution.

Applicability of The test results relate only to the behaviour of the test specimens of the
test result product under the particular conditions of test; they are not intended to be the
sole criterion for assessing the potential fire hazard of the product in use.

The test results relate only to the specimens of the product in the form in which they
were tested. Small differences in the composition or thickness of the product may
significantly affect the performance during the test and may therefore invalidate the
test results. Care should be taken to ensure that any product which is supplied or
used is fully represented by the specimens which were tested.

Validity The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of
ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may
also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test
reports over five years old should be considered by the user. The laboratory
that issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review
of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are
consistent with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

This report may only be reproduced in full. Extracts or abridgements shall not be
published without permission of Exova Warringtonfire.

Test Details
Purpose of test To determine the performance of a product when it is subjected to the
conditions of the test specified in BS 476: Part 7: 1997, "Fire tests on building
materials and structures, method for classification of the surface spread of
flame of products". This test was therefore performed in accordance with the
procedure specified in BS 476: Part 7: 1997 and this report should be read in
conjunction with that British Standard.

Scope of test BS 476: Part 7: 1997 specifies a method of test for measuring the lateral
spread of flame along the surface of a specimen of a product orientated in the
vertical position, and a classification system based on the rate and extent of
flame spread. It provides data suitable for comparing the performances of
essentially flat materials, composites, or assemblies, which are used primarily
as the exposed surfaces of walls or ceilings.

Form in which the Composite - Combination of materials which are generally recognised in
specimens were building constructions as discrete entities e.g. coated or laminated materials.
tested Each specimen was tested in direct contact with a nominally 12mm thick non-
combustible backing board.

Exposed face The coated face of the specimens was exposed to the heating conditions of the
test.

Test Results
Results and The test results for the individual specimens, together with observations made
observations during the test and comments on any difficulties encountered during the test
are given in Appendix 1.

Classification In accordance with the class definitions given in BS 476: Part 7: 1997; the
specimens tested are classified as Class 1.

Criteria for If the prefix 'D' or suffix 'R' or 'Y' is included in the classification, this indicates
classification that the results should be treated with caution. An explanation of the reason for
the prefix and suffixes is given in Appendix 2, together with the classification
limits specified in the Standard.

The laboratory
that issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review
of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are

that may affect the flame spread occurs (e.g. class 3Y).

For example, a classification of D3RY could be achieved indicating (a) a modified

surface has been used; (b) a class 3 result has been obtained; (c) additional
specimens have been used to obtain 6 valid results and; (d) softening and/or other
behaviour has occurred which is considered to have affected the test result.

THE PROJECT
A US $ 18.4 M wastewater treatment plant was constructed by Suido kiko in Sudair,
Riyadh. The plant will have an output capacity of 10,000 cubic meter/day of water. The
raw water with its strong chemicals necessitated the consideration of a high quality
coating which will not only protect the concrete surfaces but also provide an aesthetic
look to the waste water treatment plant. The coating surface area was 20,000 M2.

THE SOLUTION
Fosroc Products
The challenge was to provide a proper concrete protection coating which will not only
protect the concrete surfaces against the raw sewage water but also to the coating to
have a UV resistance property as the tanks are open to the atmosphere. The design life
of the structure is 50 years hence the coating was also expected to last the life of the
host concrete. Nitocote EPS was proposed after carefully analyzing all the project
parameters. The project requires the coating to be of international standards.

THE BENEFITS
Surface Preparatoion Works
The coating works were carried out under the supervision of FOSROC engineers by
Kayan Contracting Co who was the applicators of the coating works. The coating works
were completed to the full satisfaction of the client.
