Intellectual

revolution:
Copernican and Darwinian
what is an intellectual
revolution?
refer to Greek speculation about the "nature" in the
period before Socrates (roughly 600 to 400 BCE).
showed how society was transformed by science
and technology.
Intellectual revolution refers to series of events
that led to the emergence of modern science and
more current scientific thinking across critical
periods in history. It is also the period where
paradigm shifts occurred.
CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY
Famous Greek philosopher and
astronomer.
Stated that the planets, the sun,
and the moon moved in a circular
motion around the Earth-
existence of days and nights.
GEOCENTRISM/GEOCENTRIC
MODEL
a superseded description of
the Universe with Earth at
the center.
under the Geocentric model,
the Sun, Moon, Stars, and
planets all orbited Earth.
supported by Aristotle and
Ptolemy.
NICHOLAS
COPERNICUS
a Polish mathematician and
astronomer.
developed his model of a
Sun-centered universe.
explained the daily and
yearly motion of the sun
and stars in the universe.
COPERNICAN REVOLUTION
is a major shift of worldwide views
from believing that the Earth is the
center of the universe to believing the
Sun centered solar system which is
proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus.
HELIOCENTRISM/HELIOCENTRIC
MODEL the center of the solar
system is not the Earth
but actually the sun.
started the birth of
modern astronomy,
scientific revolution,
and the transformation
of society's thoughts
and beliefs.
Intellectual people who provided facts and evidences that
supports the heliocentric theory:

1. Tycho Brahe measured the distance of stars and

made the Geoheliocentric model.
2. Johannes Kepler used Calculus to form laws
and formulas that also made the heliocentric
model factual.
3. Galileo Galilei's developed his own telescope and
see the Galilean moons.
4. Sir Isaac Newton's law of gravitation
CHARLES DARWIN
an English naturalist, biologist, and
geologist.
all life is related and has descended
from a common ancestor: the birds
and the bananas, the fishes and the
flowers -- all related.
published his book, On the Origin of
Species.
complex creatures evolve from more
simplistic ancestors naturally over
time.
THEORY OF EVOLUTION
populations pass
through a process of
natural selection in
which only the fittest
would survive.
organisms have the ability to adapt to their environment
and would gradually changed into something that would
be more competitive to survive- evolution
This theory of evolution has two main points:
1. all life on Earth is connected and related to
each other
2. this diversity of life came about because of
the modifications in populations that were
driven by natural selection
