Born in 1940, UK businessman Sir Clive Sinclair has an enduring place in the minds of British people for
two reasons. First, he was the man who (1. revolt) __________ home computing with the ZX series of
computers, and secondly, he was the man whose (2. alter) __________ to the car, the C5, failed spectacularly

Part 3: There are five words that are not necessary in the passage. Underline the words and pick them out.
Write the words in the spaces below. Number 0 is an example. (0,5 m)
Personal Space is the term that refers to the distance we like to keep between ourselves and other people.
When someone we do not know well gets too close we usually begin to feel uncomfortable. If such a business
colleague comes closer than 1.2 metre, the most common response is to move away. Some interesting studies
have been done in libraries. If strangers come too close, many people get up and leave the building, others use
any different methods such as turning their back on the intruder. Living in cities has made people develop new
skills for dealing with situations where they are close to strangers. Most people on the crowded trains try not to
look at strangers; they avoid skin contact, and apologize if hands touch by a mistake. People use newspapers as
a barrier between themselves and other people, and if they do not have one, they stare into the distance, making
sure where they are not looking into anyone’s eyes.

Whilst nobody denies the pressures of everyday life, what is surprising is that we are yet to develop
successful ways of dealing with them. Even the experts consider the current strategies to (4) __________

or relaxation techniques, we must exploit it. Apparently, research shows that people who create conditions of
stress for (5) __________ by doing exciting and risky sports or looking for challenges, cope much better with
life’s problems. Activities of this type (6) __________ been shown to create a lot of emotion; people may
actually cry or feel extremely uncomfortable. But there is a point at which they realize they have succeeded and
know that it was a positive experience. This is because we learn through challenge and difficulty. That’s (7)

The computer and its uses
Few industries have changed so much in such a short time as the computer industry, and the pace of change
shows no sign of slowing. The computer now has a role in almost every aspect of modern life, and it has
radically affected the way people work, play, study and organise their lives.
As we enter the 21st century, computers are influencing ways of teaching and learning, as access to
computers in schools is becoming more widespread and varied. (1) __________ In a one-to-one mode,
computers provide a wide variety of information and practice material. (2) __________ The one-to-one
interaction students have with the computer, along with the immediate response to their answers, help to
promote independent learning.
(3) __________ In the fast-changing world of business, employees are being physically removed from the
workplace and the proximity of their colleagues, while remaining virtually connected via telephone, at the
Internet. Laptop computers enable businesses people who travel to have access to important information and the
touch of a key. (4) __________ Computers are used to solve time-consuming data- management problems, such

Part 4: Choose the item (A, B, C, or D) that best answers the following questions about the passage. Write
your answers in the spaces below. (0,5 m)
Situated in the central mountains of Alaska, a peak named Denali rises 20,320 feet above sea level. It is the
highest peak in North America and the center of Denali National Park. One of America’s greatest wilderness
areas, the park has had limited access to visitors, but 5 in spite of this tourism rose from under 6,000 visitors in
1950 to over 546,000 visitors in 1990. The increasing popularity of this park is prompting serious discussions
about the future use of Denali as well as how to preserve wilderness areas in general.
One important issue of land use arises when parts of National Parks are owned by individuals. In Denali,
though most of the land in this vast tract of more than a million acres is owned by the National Park Service,
several thousand acres are still privately owned as mining tracts. These mining tracts in Denali were once
abundant sources of gold, but they were sources of heavy metals such as arsenic and lead that polluted rivers
and streams.
Environmentalists were successful in getting the government to require mining companies to submit
statements showing the potential impact of a mining project before they are allowed to begin mining. Because
of this requirement, many individuals closed their mines, and some sold their land to the National Park Service.

Some landowners, however, are wondering if it is better to sell their land to the National Park Service for public
future use. Tourism in this previously remote 25 area is bound to rise, as more roads are built to provide easier
access to the park. This increase in the number of visitors creates a demand for hotels and other real estate
development. The economic implications of this are of interest to the landowners but are dismaying to those
interested in preserving the wilderness.
1. What is the primary focus of this passage
A. Controversies over land use in Denali B. Miners selling their property in Denali
C. Alaska building more roads to Denali D. Limiting tourist access to Denali
2. According to the passage, which of the following are pollutants in the Denali area?
A. gold B. pesticides C. human waste D. arsenic
3. The author infers that some mine owners might hesitate to sell their land to the Park Service for which of the
following reasons?
A. There may be increasing demand for the ore in the mines.
B. They might want to move to the towns.
C. They might receive more money selling their land to developers.
D. They might want to build a house on their property.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. to demonstrate the changes in Denali National Park
B. to use Denali as an example of common park issues
C. to introduce the wonders of the wilderness area of Denali
D. to explain the problems occurring in Denali Park
5. Which of the following would most likely be the topic of the next paragraph in this passage?
A. conflict between land owners and environmentalists B. tourist needs in Denali Park
C. the role of the National Park Service in D. wildlife in the park
development
Part 5: For questions 1-5 read through the following text and then choose from the list A-I below the best
phrase to fill each of the spaces. Some of the suggested answers do not fit at all. Number 0 is an example.

B. instead of solid carbon
C. but later it partially succeeded
D. except that Hunning’s invention was superior
E. in breach of copyright
F. to make telephones in England
G. that conflict resulted
H. particularly those that deal with magnetism and electricity
I. who made the first big improvement
Most people have heard of Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone in 1876. But it was a little-
known English priest called Henry Hunnings (0) I Bell’s model could transmit a voice up to about 23km. A
year after its invention, Thomas Edison improved on the model by attaching a solid- carbon button inside the
mouthpiece. But Hunnings decided to experiment with granular carbon (1) __________. This improved the
voice clarity and extended the voice-transmission distance to about 72km. Hunnings was granted a patent for
his invention in December 1878.
Hunnings was born in 1843 near London. He became a priest in Yorkshire and although much of his time
was taken up with Church matters, he had a profound interest in all sorts of gadgets, (2) __________. A friend
of Hunnings with similar interests, called Cox Walker, built a telephone receiver. In 1880 an American called
Anders visited England and asked Walker if he could inspect the Hunnings transmitter. He was impressed and
offered Hunnings £1,000 for the patent. The offer was accepted and the Globe Company was formed (3)
__________. In 1881 Hunnings was granted two patents in the United States for his invention. But by this time
so many people and companies were involved in telephone design and manufacturing (4) __________. There
was a famous court case in 1882 when the United Telephone Company took the Globe Company to court for an
alleged infringement of its patents. At first it failed to have the Hunnings patent declared invalid (5)
__________. It then bought the rights to the entire patent from Hunnings.

Part 6: You are going to read a text from an information leaflet about electric cars. Choose the most suitable
heading from the list A-I for each part (1-5) of the text. There is one extra heading which you do not need to
use. There is an example at the beginning (0). (0,5 m)
A. They can handle long journeys
B. Why go electric?
C. Ideal for running about locally
D. An important step forward
E. Not such a new idea
F. Cars for enthusiasts
G. Drivers got fed up with them

0. E Small electric-powered vehicles, or ‘EVs’, as their supporters often refer to them, are being talked about as
the cars of the future. Many people probably think of them as a revolutionary concept. Yet the surprising truth
is that electric cars first made their appearance as long ago as the 1830s.
1. __________ Early petrol-powered cars were noisy and often broke down, while electric cars were more
reliable and quieter. However, despite the fact that in 1900 an electric-powered car was driven 180 miles
without its batteries having to be charged, it was the restricted range of the majority of electric cars which
caused them to lose out to their petrol-powered rivals. Drivers quickly tired of cars that they could only drive
for a few miles before they had to stop to charge their batteries. It was only in vehicles that were needed to pull
huge weights, like trains and trams, that electric engines were deemed preferable.
2. __________ Today the EV is starting to make a comeback. While just about every major car manufacturer
has a prototype electric car, the great majority of EVs that are actually on the streets are models built by tiny
independent companies or conversions carried out by amateurs. Anyone wanting to convert their own car can
visit a number of sites on the Internet to find out how to go about doing this.
3. __________ A converted vehicle allows the driver to go between 25 and 50 miles on a charge. The exact
range depends on the type of battery that you decide to install. Probably the best option is to use 8-volt batteries
which result in a reasonably light, and therefore fairly quick vehicle, which can still go 40 miles before its
batteries need recharging. This is perfectly adequate for the daily needs of the average driver. EVs are easy to
drive in city traffic and when they are returned to the garage for the night, the driver simply plugs them into the
mains to recharge for the following morning.
4. __________ At present, many EV owners say they have to have a second, conventional car because their
EVs are restricted to short distances. However, experimental electric-powered vehicles are breaking range
records all the time. Recently, a specially designed, light-bodied vehicle went an impressive 373 miles on a
single charge. The secret of its success was its nickel-metal hydride batteries which, unfortunately, are
extremely expensive at present and more than the average enthusiast can afford.
5. __________ Many battery types and battery chemistries are being tested. Researchers have come up with a
new type of lead-acid battery. It is being tried out in vehicles being driven on the streets of Seattle and so far the
researchers have been very pleased with its performance. It looks like these batteries may be able to deliver a 50
per cent increase to a vehicle’s range and, most importantly, shouldn’t cost the earth if they go into production.
