STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
A COMPARATIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF STRESS AND COPING
STRATEGIES BETWEEN HUSBANDS AND WIVES ATTENDING INFERTILITY AT
SELECTED HOSPITALS, JAMMU”

OBJECTIVES
1. To assess the level of stress among husbands and wives attending infertility clinic at
selected hospital, Jammu.
2. To assess the level of coping strategies among husbands and wives attending infertility
clinics at selected hospital, Jammu.
3. To compare the level of stress and coping strategies among husbands and wives attending
infertility clinics at selected hospital, Jammu.
4. To associate the level of stress among husbands and wives attending infertility clinics at
selected hospital, Jammu with selected demographic variables.
5. To associate the coping mechanism among husbands and wives attending infertility
clinics at selected hospital, Jammu with selected demographic variables.

HYPOTHESIS

H0: There is no significant difference in stress between husbands and wives attending
infertility clinics at selected hospitals, Jammu.
H01: There is no significant difference in coping strategies between husbands and wives
attending infertility clinics at selected hospitals, Jammu.

H1: There is significant difference in stress between husbands and wives attending infertility
clinics at selected hospital, Jammu.
H2: There is significant difference in coping strategies between husbands and wives attending
infertility clinics at selected hospital, Jammu.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS: -

Assess: - To systematically measure and analyse the performance of infertile couples and
making informed judgement.
Stress: - An individual’s subjective assessment of stress perceptions of various stress-related
factors, including the sense of unpredictability, lack of control by using a Perceived Stress
Scale.
Coping strategies: -These are measurable and observable behavioural or cognitive strategies
that couples employ to manage and adapt to stress by using a standardized COMPI Coping
Strategies Scale.
Husband and wives: -According to the study Husbands and wives are the couples who are
attending infertility clinics at selected Hospital, Jammu.

DELIMITATIONS:

The study will be limited to: -

Couple attending the infertility clinics only.

Couple of age group 30- 45 years only.


RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: -

RESEARCH APPROACH:

Research approach was the basic procedure for conducting the study. The Quantitative research

approach will be used for the present study.

RESEARCH DESIGN:

A Nonexperimental comparative research design will be used for the present study.

RESEARCH SEETINGS:

The study will be conducted at selected hospitals, Jammu.

POPULATION:

The population for the study is the husbands and wives who are attending infertility clinics during
the period of data collection.

TARGET POPULATION

A target population consists of the total number of people who are meeting the designated set of
criteria.

The target population will Husbands and wives who are receiving treatment at the infertility clinic.

ACCESSIBLE POPULATION

Husbands and wives who are receiving treatment at the infertility clinics during the time of data
collection.

SAMPLE SIZE:

The sample size will be 100 couple. 50 each husband and wives.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE:

The sampling technique used for data collection is Purposive Sampling.


CRITERIA FOR SAMPLE SELECTION:

INCLUSION CRITERIA

1. Couple who are attending the infertility clinics.

2. Those who are willing to participate in the study.

3. Couples who can understand English and Hindi.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA

1. Surrogate mothers attending the infertility clinics.

2. Those who are not willing to participate in the study.

SCORING PROCEDURE
PERCEIVED STRESS SCALE: -

The Likert questionnaire consists of 10 questions.

A score of 0- was allotted to Never, A score of 1- was allowed to Almost never, A score of 2-
was allotted to Sometimes, A score of 3- was allotted to Very often.

Score ranging from 0- 13 would be low stress.

Score ranging from 14 - 26 would be moderate stress.

Score ranging from 27 - 40 would be highly perceived stress.

NOTE: - Question no 4, 5, 7, 8 had negative, reverse scoring.

THE COMPI COPING STRATEGY SCALE: -

Likert questionaries consists of 19 questions. It has 4 sub scale. A. Active avoidance (4)
B.Active Confronting (7). C. Passive (7). D. Meaning based (5).

A score of 1- was allotted Not Used.

A score of 2- was allotted Used.

A score of 3- was allotted Used quiet.

A score of 4- was allotted Used a great deal.

Score ranging from 1 - 19 would be Poor coping,score

Score ranging from 20 - 38 would be Average coping,

Score ranging from 39 - 57 would be Good coping,

Score ranging from 58 - 76 would be Excellent coping.
